So basically, these kids that will likely continue into service post high school are suppose to treated like the little snowflakes the most of them are? I disagree completely. Weed out the weak ones and let the strong move forward.

JROTC/ROTC need to be fully aware of what to expect when/if they go the military route after school. Treating them like they are in a daycare facility and being PC or mindful of their “feelings” as to not offend one of them is not helping them prepare for military life.

Nah, the principal is an ex-SF guy and knowing him (we drink beer together) I’m sure he’s fully supportive. This is at a school in a military town. Most of these kids are military brats.

I agree, BUT having worked with both ROTC and JROTC I will say it can be very dependent on the school climate and parents. The JROTC program falls under Cadet Command (S2 typically) for oversight, however the cadre are also employed by the school. You have to play ball with the school.

As a former S3 in Cadet Command and later an SMSI for an ROTC program, I worked with lots of JROTC programs along the east coast. Most of the kids preferred more of a military type experience.

The days of a five hour smoke session are long gone, even in active line companies. As such they have to be toned down a bit, but again it doesn’t mean it has to or should go away completely. A more authoritative approach is what wins over some of the harder cases. Like everything else, there is a happy medium in there. It’s just typically something lower then what you might see in big army. Hell, MOST ROTC programs can’t even get away with more then a few pushups these days.

It’s a touchy thing, especially in a liberal school or an Ivy League. They fancy themselves elite and intellectual schools that have a hard time reconciling the fact that you didn’t kill anyone before coming in to teach for the day.

Same rule in the USAF. Carried in left hand, right hand free. In the event both hands are occupied, render verbal greeting.

I dunno, I see umbrella's as useless. We aircraft maintainers had to be out in the crappy weather, we wouldnt ever get to use an umbrella...#1 reason you couldnt really do your job holding an umbrella, #2 it would be a safety hazard--being around running engines and stuff. #3 it/you would look stupid holding an umbrella out on the flightline...we had rain gear. If it was raining and had to have service dress on for some reason, you'd just run in to the building.

Of course I wouldn't worry about one as a maintainer, but you're also wearing different gear and not blues. Just as not everyone in the USAF fixes aircraft, not every Marine is in battle dress in the field.

If you're doing a CBPO (Commissary, BX, Post Office) run, an umbrella is a perfectly normal device. As well as going to and from work, and any quick stops on the way home. We never used umbrellas in outdoor formations - we just moved those formations indoors or into a hangar. The only exception I've seen is Basic Training graduation...in which case those bubbas are getting wet.

I've only seen umbrellas used by civilians or dudes in civvies on post. We used to not be allowed to wear our raingear.
