I think they're just suspicious that the dealer was trying to sell you on something.

I'd verify, but I don't even have power mirrors.

I think you're misunderstanding... People are just telling you that it sounds like BS from the dealer. I don't think they're shitting on you. They're just upset by the story you were told.

It doesn't pass the sniff test for me, either.

I can totally understand that extreme vibrations/slamming around might physically change their orientation and require a recalibration... I'm just having trouble understanding how having them turned on would make a difference.

I was rear-ended twice and it wasn't until a guy bent my frame that the sensors needed to be recalibrated, so, I'm assuming the forces involved need to be pretty damn heavy.

So I'll assume you were driving through a nice sandy area since you said seashore and beach....

If you look at the rear bumper there is a gap where sand can be sprayed in between the outside facia/cover of the rear "bumper" and the inner support plastic.
When sand/dirt/squirrel-bits shoot through that little gap they sometimes build up in front of the sensor that is in the corner.

Unless something is loose, or you hit the bumper/twist the frame your spine will go out of calibration on those trails before the sensor does.

There's a TSB on this.. had to get mine recalibrated twice, and they ended up replacing both on the 3rd time. Mine broke during smooth freeway driving, so I'd assume it's a bad sensor.

my Good friend is the service manager and another good friend is the service advisor manager the mechanic that looked at it is a fishing buddy of mine. So no they are not blowing smoke. Even when I had my 2015 Tacoma they relied on me for front diff vibrations .

I don’t ever have to wait or anything like that. I know my truck and I’m very in-tuned with how it acts.

I was just letting y’all know about what David (master tech, that ran the test while I was in the bay) so hey if you feel I’m wrong then by all means don’t follow

No one is blaming you, you're just a victim of dealer's BS. There is no way BSM can go out of calibration by just driving on sandy or rocky roads. BSM has two fixed non-learnable modules inside the body of the truck. Unless they physically get damaged, no calibration should be required.

Mine just randomly stopped working with a recent snow storm, of course I just hit 40K so the dealer wants $300 to fix, "this is an extremely well known problem with the Tacoma", their words not mine yet I'm still out $300 and 3 hours to "calibrate it".... I feel like there is an easier fix out there. Tried the wash and reset didn't work, there are a few other threads on it as well. They also tried to tell me my lift and how much I tow messes with it, I have never towed anything with it...

This ^^^^ is real. Lot's of people have posted about this exact scenario and it happened to me as well. Snow is thrown from the rear tires and packs into the bottom of the bumper totally loading up the modules/sensors and next thing you know you get the dreaded "BSM not available" message. I managed to get mine working again with the help of a bootleg copy of Techstream and a Tactrix cable. Nowadays, I keep BSM turned off and won't use it unless the roads are dry.

Are you for real OP? Or did the dealer try to sell you the BSM calibration for $100? lol

I have never had any issues with my BSM other than snow or wet leaves stuck to my bumper and it giving a weird warning/error. I just cleared my bumper and restarted the truck and all was good again.

That makes sense. Really glad you followed up with what the fix was.
    Thanks!

So it was the truck’s computer and not the off-road with the system turned ON that created the issue??

But if what your dealer buddies are telling you is true, (turning it off while off-road) I would ask them how they came by the info, like for instance, is it in the owner’s manual?
It should be if its an known issue, or is it in a tsb, the service manual or service a bulletin that they could give you a copy that you could post on here and we could all be better informed.

    Inquiring minds want to know…

    Cheers!

There are two TSBs out there right now but they only apply to vehicles still under warranty. I guess a defective part is only defective to Toyota from 0-36k miles...
