Sup guys I have 1st Gen with a fabtech 6inch lift yeah I know db lift b.s. but I liked the look of it and don't do any rock crawling... At least not yet. Anyways just want opinions. I am thinking of overlanding with it I've taken it to Hollister hills here in CA. It does ok but highways and mpg suck. What would be easier to do? getting the axle or just do the regearing to 4.88s

Regearing is infinitely easier than doing a solid front axle conversion.

I mean this in the best possible way but if you have to ask which is easier then the solid front axle swap is not for you.

if you never plan on wheeling it then just regear, but don't expect much since the DB lift is creating a lot of aerodynamic issues, at best you'll get some pep back in the city

Well not just easier but economical i guess. Cause for one it rides like shit off-road lol. Don't want to waste money on regearing if I can slowly get all the parts to do the swap instead.... At least the rear axle but then it'll probably look funky with a wider rear then front ha. But then again I don't know shit about fabrication to know what I'm talking about.. sucks when the truck has sentimental value otherwise I'd start all over.

Last time I did the math on SAS doing a regear came in about $7500 cheaper. I have been wheeling hard on 35s and haven't been let down yet.

There is a lot of work in the swap and lots of odds and ends that add up

You're asking if it's easier/cheaper to do a solid axle swap or to regear???

I don't think you understand what is involved in doing a solid axle swap OR a re-gear...

2013 Tacoma TDR Offroad Automatic. 2.5" lift in the front, 3" lift I the rear, 285/75r16 BFGs
Bought it with drop bracket lift and BFGs (good find). Took it to a shop to weld on a stock frame bracket to undo the drop bracket lift and install a proper spring lift. Hoping to regear to 4.56 and put on front and rear bumpers in the future. Also, of course hoping for a supercharger someday.
If it rides like shit on your lift, get a better suspension. I've got a 6" lift on my 2nd gen and it rides like a dream offroad. Also you gotta drop your tire pressure down to like 20psi offroad for comfort and traction. I'm personally doing a regear to 4.56 gears because of the tire change up to 33's. so my suggestion, better suspension and regear

Also. I'm in the bay too, I wouldn't mind taking a look at the truck with ya. I'm a newbie too but I could help out.
