Sound from behind dash/engine when cold out?

    Hey guys,

When the weather drops below 30F I've been hearing a weird sound behind the dash/left side of the engine when idling or at a stop light. The best way to describe it is it sounds almost like a fridge running but 5 times louder. One thing to mention is that when I start driving, it goes away until i come to another stop. Could there be air in the coolant system since it stops when I start driving? It's not a watery slosh noise like I've read on here, which makes me think it might something else, a heater core issue maybe or a noisey pump? Never had an issue in the summer either.

    Thanks

    Welcome to TW!
Do you have your defroster on when this is happening or is it regardless of what the ac/heater is doing?

    Thanks!
Everything is usually off most of time, I've tried cranking the heat but not the AC yet. It's just weird as soon as I touch the gas, it stops. Could it be the brake booster?

Hmm, I'm not sure. I have a noise similar to that when my defroster is on, but I think it's just the condenser working or something.

Weird, when I go out later I'll try to crank the defroster and AC and see if it changes anything

Coming from the engine bay, or interior?

Well, that's strange...not many moving parts left of steering column.

Have you stepped outside and opened the hood when this goes on?

Let's get our directions correct here...as your sitting in the driver side, the noise is right or left of the steering column.

Well that is interesting. Can't hear from under the hood outside?

I tried once but all I heard was the taco tick lol. Another thing to mention just in case, I did a drain and fill a while back and followed the thread correctly using the AT Temp check mode. Could I have messed up the level somehow and its the tranny/torque converter making noise through the interior? It's just strange it stops when I start driving but comes back at idle...

Yes, it is strange. Not sure what to tell you here. Perhaps post a vid? ...although they are not always that useful.

No worries man, my phone doesn't really pick up the sound. I'll try to pin point the noise better when I go out later. Thanks for your help though

I have a vibration when I first start my truck also. Mainly the vibration is only when I’m backing up or creeping forward before it warms up. I haven’t pinpointed it yet but it sounds like it’s behind the glove box.

Mine is similar sometimes when I am stopped at a stop light with the truck in drive, I get a vibration or rattling sound from the right side firewall area. It can be rather loud at times. I was thinking maybe something to do with the torque converter because it goes away as soon a I start driving.
