Just sharing ideas I found on here. I made the holes in the straps with a hot screwdriver to prevent fraying.

We got our first hit of rain in a long while yesterday. There were a couple of small leaks in the corners. That seam sealer is the shit though. Super easy to use and you can see and feel it working.

@tonered what spots did you hit with the seam sealer? We haven’t gotten rain yet. Instructions say to hit it where it’s leaking but I kind of want to hit it at all the exposed stitches before it rains haha.

The leaks were small and didn't really flow. Just some drips.

If you really want to hit it first, just pop open all the sides and loosen the straps. Then, hit the whole seem that goes around the top. Get some fluid in the fold of the seam and be sure the thread gets moistened also. The flaps around the front and rear bars will keep the fluid off the windows, but wipe up excess and drips. The stuff is a bit sticky.

Awesome thanks @tonered i’m going to hit all those seams, may as well.

Has anyone modded an insulation layer for cold weather camping? I have a layer from a roof top tent that I sold, going to try and rig it up somehow. Any tips appreciated

I'm going to see how cold it is first. I did a miserable night in the back of a pick up many years ago with a kiddy sleeping bag and a blanket where it didn't cover. It was memorable.

I have a hammock and cold has kept me from trying it for a night. I like a cold face, but core, hands, and feet need to be happy.

I should have tried the flashlight trick. It was back in the pre-LED days.

I'm also thinking of Mr Buddy for before lights out and mornings.

No installation in mine. I either use my 19° backpacking sleeping bag or my -20° snowshoe camping bag depending on the weather. I use an insulated sleeping pad with either option.

I get more condensation inside the softopper than I do with my tent, but it's worth it for the convenience of camp setup.

Make a bottle buddy if you get really cold. Just boil a liter of water, fill up a Nalgene bottle, and bring it in your sleeping bag with you.

I have a 20deg mummy sack. My initial thoughts are my air pad and Thermarest pad stacked with an old, too-warm-in-the-summer kind of comforter as a helper.

It will definitely be a convenience thing to avoid dicking with a wet tent in the winter. I can deal with condensation for a couple days.

My one friend makes his own warm Nalgene bottle in the middle of the night. I tell him that it is one posh toilet. He says that it ain't gonna leak.

I also have a Coleman catalytic heater. Makes it nicer to get dressed in the morning, and heats up the inside of the softopper in about 10 minutes.
