Good Morning All and Thank You Veterans :hattip:

Both of our sons know that experience. ;)

If it helps any, Doug, too much ladder time this last break has the bone spurs in my heel making their presence known, little hitch in my gait for couple days I reckon.

I am not sure why food places and such want to give away free meals , I presume it helps their bottom lines with tax deductions same as the discount's elsewhere. I really don't know any vet that I served with or am friends with that chose to serve based on the freebies they would get from businesses. I wanted to serve for my own reasons and to get job training I already got paid for it so why ask for help if you do not need it. Hell I know even more myself included that don't even think to ask about a discount . Though, I do occasionally usually at Home Despot or Lowest for big purchases. Though not any more at Lowest since they want me to register to get the discount.

I would rather the businesses put more toward helping the Vets on the street and in halfway houses, homes etc . I mean think about it most of us are working and have the money for a 5 dollar meal or so or have a home that we could just make our own meal in . The restaurants could maybe provide a meal to these places, other business could donate items to make ones stuck in the nursing homes lives a little better etc etc. How about perhaps job training to work in these businesses with the understanding some guys and gals are really messed up so they would have to work with them .

I am sure there are a whole bunch of smarter folks out there that could figure out a better way for these companies offering these discounts to get more bang for their buck then one day a year discount . IMHO

We may be drinking the same coffee. I had those very thoughts this morning that if the businesses tied into a Stand Down event. I'm sure I'd be more willing to visit these establishments and support them with my business.

Happy Veterans Day and thank you to all that served.
On the topic of free meals, I'm guessing the servers probably make out pretty good with a few more customers and better than average tips. But the expense of a few free meals is a drop in the bucket for those chains. Doubt there were any lost profits.
Getting ready for a cold snap. 67 degrees now dropping to 24.

Yours and my own little pea brain thoughts have inspired me to look further into this. Not just as write off (the first 3 years of a new business is expected to be losses so I don't need any write offs), but as a way to help. I kinda shy'd away from a lot of these places that provide help mostly because their administrative costs are skimmed off the top and are so high. And I don't particularly care for the nation wide organizations because their accountability isn't quite transparent enough as well as the admin costs. So my quest now is to go locally and find a way to contribute in a more meaningful manner.

As for the free meals on Veterans Day , they're not exactly free . Alot of places last year charged a minimum of $5 to $7 for their Veterans meals

Like at Dennys I ended up paying $5 plus tip for their " Free meal "

When kids come by the house for fundraising for scouts, sports ect. I just give them money, don’t need some stale popcorn, or overpriced stuff. The Girl Scout cookies are a different story.

Check out Andrew Wilkow, he started a charity ride a couple years ago to benefit Veterans organizations, this year the ride got canceled due to some logistics issues. He is dedicating his 3hr show on Patriot XM 125 to support the vets. If you scroll down to bottom of his home page it lists the folks he is supporting.

I guess I'll have to get my GS cookie fix somewhere else this year. My daughter transitioned to a "life member" and is no longer actually in a Girl Scout troop.
