my 2012 is developing some small spots where paint has been nicked. Some of the spots are starting to show rust.

Id say there are about 12-15 small spots on the hood/around windshield. Most are small, size of pen tip, biggest one is size of pencil eraser.

Anything that i can do on my own to help those spots and keep from spreading and getting worse?

My first though was clean/dry and just dab some of the matching paint you can buy in the tube. Or if i could just dab clear coat kn there??? No clue

The factory touch up paint has a little tip you can use to hopefully scuff up the rust and maybe remove it if it’s small enough, then just touch up with the paint.

Use a dental pick to scrape away the rust, down to bare metal. Prime with something like RustOLeum rusty metal primer. Then two or more coats of touch up paint to match your color code. I found using a toothpick to apply the paint in the precise location makes a pretty good fix.

Yes, tooth picks work great. Also a diabetic syringe. Tried one of my moms, you can control the paint very well because the needle is so tiny.

Oh man... the proper way to do it so it lasts and protects is all about the prep.

    Wash
Chemically decontaminate with iron X (or similar)
    Clay bar

Then you'll need a #2 pencil, a hole punch and 1500-2000 grit sandpaper. Use the hole punch to snap out a piece of sandpaper. Superglue it to eraser on pencil. This is now your "prep tool"

Spin it between your fingers on the chips. Make sure you get all rust out.

    Clean spots with isopropyl alcohol.

Fill chip with paint however you like (i like using a fine point paint filler)

Once filled and dry wet sand with #2 pencil tool until filled paint is level.

Finish with a compound polish and sealer if your choice.

This is what I have used in the past for paint touch up's if you want to go for a more professional approach.
You will need touch up paint.

Clean and scuff the spots with the sanding pen then you can use the fine line pen to get a nice accurate coat of paint into the chips and spots. The fine line pen has a small cup on it which you fill with paint and it allows you to apply it in very fine drops to fill chips and deep scratches without applying too much paint.

After you have applied the paint and it has cured you can use a polisher/buffer to blend it all out so it's barely noticeable.

Pretty much similar to what the post above recommends.

Lol, did you see the rest of the hood... professional not a concern. Dont want it looking like some of the 2nd gens i see driving around though. I just want to stop the problem where it is and cover the spots
