New Bilstein 8112 Coilovers !

Just decided on 8112's,8100 now the spring choice,, I have sliders but am not planning on doing the after market bumper and winch. I'll let the other guys pull me out with a strap kit I just purchased. And will tip you of course.

 

I have the heavier springs, (650Lb) and with a Warn semi-hidden front bumper, without the winch they felt a little stiff.

So the springs that come with the fronts will be fine.

Deaver, Alcan, or Icon Rxt's are what people are generally running for leafs. But if you're not carrying anything in the back and not looking for any lift, the 8100's feel great with the stock leafs.

Why did you go with Icon RXT instead of Deaver. My only time dealing with deaver was an excellent one.

You’re no dummy. You’re asking all the right questions and doing your homework. We’re all modifying a highly engineered vehicle and there are a lot of aspects to this. The fun part is getting educated along the way and knowing what you did, how you did it and why you did it.

 

Was easier for me to get Icon's up here in Canada than Deavers.
Icon RXT also comes with a spare leaf so if I ever add a cap or other heavy stuff I don;t have to order another leaf.

 

The 8112's are adjustable from .5 to 2" lift. Come set from the factory at 1.5" for the DCSB trucks with the 600Lb springs.

So you can adjust them to whatever you like

Do these work with the improved SPC UCA? Thought I saw somewhere where that hose connector interfered or hit with the spc uca.

Loving mine! Was off-road with them today (nothing serious) and just love the way they perform --especially when moving over 20mph...

No need for a rebuild yet, but only have about 10,000 miles on them...

 

Well pulled the trigger on the 8112's. opted not to get the rears as I have new King 2.5's with adj waiting to be installed. Price dropped back to 2018 numbers. got mine for 1500. Ordered the 700lb springs and didn't even think about it. Build is getting up there and I'm far from done..SSO bumper, winch, dual batteries, Skid, Roof rack with crap. ..bed rack and RTT going on shortly. Did beef up the rear to OME HD leafs. I carry allot of weight most of the time.

 

If you've said before, I apologize, but how much front lift are you guys getting? Seems like 2" is the max that Bilstein is saying. Is this more of a precaution because of the cv angles, or do they really not want the assembly to exceed the 19 11/32" that the install document was showing.

 

if the instructions say don’t go pass 19 11/32” total length then don’t do it. Max lift is 2” on 2016+.

 

I've seen and heard of many people going past 2" of lift. I was hoping people who have these installed could chime in on how much lift they've achieved.

 

I got 2.5” with 700# coils. I have a SSO Slimline steel front bumper w/ high clearance wings. Smittybilt X20 winch , steel skids and sliders. Also I am 2 full turns below max recommended adjustment. I probably could have gotten away with 650# coils but I am still thoroughly impressed with the ride of the 8112’s.

 

I just swapped out the springs to 700lb’ers. They will likely exceed the 2 inches but not by much. The kit came with a small spacer for both the springs at the top and the bump stop... its only 1/8 inch spacer. I guess if about 1 inch of threads give you 2 inches of lift the 1/8 inch spacer would add 1/4 inch if my math is right... so 2.25 total. I’ll be installing in a few weeks. Bilstein says in the 700lb spring install instructions “verify shock length at ride height is less than 19 11/16”. “This is to ensure there is at least 2” of droop travel from static ride height and so the stiffer rebound zone is not being engaged at ride height.” Wtf does that mean?? Setting aside the bad grammar.

 

K there was an accutune article about spring preload myths etc that would help a little bit with explaining this but it would be a little miss-leading when it came to the 8112 system...

Since these are bypass shocks (internal) they will have very different characteristics depending where the piston (disc) is inside the shock tube.

As you move the bottom spring seat up (that lifts the truck height) the shock gets longer in length...
The longer length moves the piston/disc inside the shock body further down.
If that disc is too far down it gets into an area where it was designed for more stiffness,
in this case the rebound from when your tire hits the bottom of a pothole.

People seem to think the springs compress more as you crank them up. That does not happen until you have cranked them too far...
Shocks only have X travel, as you move the truck up, there is less down travel in the shock.

8112's have very different characteristics depending where that disc is in the shock tube.

So to take the last line you can convert it to layman's terms as;
"Crank these up too far and the ride will be much stiffer/harder than what was intended"
