Show us your truck bed sleeping platform/drawer/storage systems

Just finished this adjustable sleeping platform. Super stable and needs no permanent fixtures.

I've been lurking for quite a while and decided I better share my setup. It was inspired by a few posts in here. Modular system that can be set up tore down in seconds so I can use the whole bed, half the bed, or have a full platform.

 

Here's my usual solo Tacohome. With my dogs and S.O., we just use a tent.

I use my trekking poles to prop my tonneau cover up and a PVC pipe in the hitch to make the "awning." I can set it up without needing to stake guylines as well.

 

These are all wonderful, it's great seeing so much creativity!!

 

That's how my first few trips went.

 

I've had more than a few trips with this setup and I felt really clever when I figured it out.

I am limited by my 2TR-FE so I have no plans for a roof top tent or camper shell. I am working on a pop up solution for my current tonneau cover using ripstop fabric for the sides and aluminum bracing. I'll post a writeup when it's finished.

 

Check out my build thread and the evolution I've gone through. There are members here with the same engine as you have that did do shells.

 

That's precisely the form and function of my current design! If it were warmer and less wet, the netting would probably work for me. However I'll be using waterproof sewn ripstop tent fabric and I have a spool gun for my welder, so aluminum tube is happening. I've considered foam insulation board as well, but probably won't do that.

As for the weight and engine issue, I don't need a camper shell and lightweight is the name of the game for all my camping gear.

 

I originally didn't "need" a shell either. The evolution always happens.

 

I won't get one unless it's less than $200 and it's color matched to my truck. I'm pretty serious about weight management in my gear.

Curious what people have come up with as far as sleeping pads for laying corner to corner in the short bed. Currently have a 2inch twin memory foam mattress topper trimmed to a point at each end to fit flush with the corner of the bed.
Wanting to go with something thicker/more comfy, and maybe the size of the entire platform.

I’ve started using the memory gel foam and really like it. It’s denser so the weight is a bit higher but the comfort increase is noticeable especially for a side sleeper like me.

 

Go to you your local Foam and Fabric shop and get Foam to "YOUR" needs. So many types of densities etc than buying a "Canned" version online. Ive used my local for all my trucks and my RV.

 

Great advice - I have done the same on two vehicles.

 

Its such a crap shoot with what's online such as Amazon. Like others have said, local shops will do you wonders!
