but if the OU/Baylor situation puts them both at 2 losses.

and Oregon has a win over Utah/Washington...but Auburn has wins over Alabama/Georgia AND OREGON.

The committee won't care that oregon has a conference championship, they will care that they lost to Auburn and Auburn has more quality wins.

Again... if the conference championship isn't going to mean anything... why have it.

A non conference champion should not be competing for a National championship... PERIOD.

If you weren't good enough to win your conference... you ain't good enough to be champion.

I must have missed the part where they’d all have two losses.

It would still be tricky given that either OU or Oregon would have the opportunity to play one more game than Auburn, likely over a ranked opponent. I think it would be hard for them to justify Oregon being kept out over a head to head when their body of work would be otherwise better, and I don’t see OU losing again until they get exposed in a NY6 or CFP game again.

Caveat that for non-round robin leagues. I’m not going to feel sorry for Alabama, but then not making it to the SECCG with one loss versus an ACC team that could win with 2+ is bullshit for CFP entry criteria.

Top X teams, however big the playoff is.

Yes. If you want to go that route... eliminate all conference championships.

If you're gonna have them... make them mean something.

a lot of bad ass stuff
I can’t foresee Conference Championships going away. Too much money to be had by having them. The conferences will never go for that.

I will agree with those that say the conference championships should carry weight (or more) with the committee, though.

Agreed. Conference championships should mean more. But pos Alabama ruined that for everyone.

    That... and 2011.

2 years we should have been crowning an ACTUAL national champion.

So... I had an epiphany earlier thinking about all this...

You might remember I had the idea for a 6 team playoff... and the arguments were 8 is better...

Well... we have 10 relevant conferences in FBS. The power 5 and the group of 5:
    AAC
    WAC
    Sunbelt
    Mountain West
    MAC

So... an 8 team playoff is perfect. How?!

First you take the top 6 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS... they're in. Next... take the 4 lowest ranked... label them 7a and 7b... 8a and 8b. Have them do a "play in game" like you have in CBB... use lower bowls like Birmingham or say Camilla...and start the playoffs.

First round: use the slightly less relevant bowls with a rotating schedule... Independence, Liberty, Alamo, Gator, Pinstripe and Poinsettia...

Now you have your top 4... with an already setup structure.

    It's only 1 or 2 more games.

But... the trick to this is to restructure your conference schedule to assure the best team from your conference gets in. Eliminate divisions... I'll show the example with my team: the Gators.

As an SEC team... you set 5 every season opponents... we will say for illustration UF would set UT, UGA, UK, LSU and USCe as those games.
Then... rotate 4 on an every other year cycle:
Year 1... AUB, aTm, MS, MSU
Year 2... ALA, VAN, MO, AR
Years 3 and 4 flip the home game

You have now created a scenario where a player plays in all SEC stadiums in his career.

Take the top 2 teams from a conference... championship game.

    Then... the 3 OOC:

A kickoff game: This year was Miami for us... but something along those lines
A tune up: require it to at least be within the 10 conferences to remain playoff eligible... we'd pick a school like Toledo
    A rivalry: FSU.

This is my rough draft... and I know I'm leaving a few details out... but you get the basic premise.

I agree that in order for college football to get it right, the conferences must come together and rearrange themselves so that conference championships matter and are first step in playoffs. I don't know how a sane person can argue against, if you can't win your conference you aren't the best in the country.
