New truck, first scheduled oil change at 10,000... really?

My 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport is coming up on 5000 miles. The first dealer maintenance coming up, does *not* include oil change. I'm old school, raised on changing (non-syn) oil every 3000 or even more frequently. The Toyota service schedule calls for the first oil change at 10,000 miles.

So my question is:Can synthetic oil really be changed every 10,000 miles (assuming street/highway driving)?

 

The Toyota engineers designed this engine and know it well. They wouldn’t tell you to do something that’s going to ruin your engine when you have engine warranty and it would he there fix. Trust in the engineers!

 

That is correct. The oil will be fine past 10k miles and has been proven by members here that sent samples to the Blackstone lab. It's nothing to worry about. Enjoy the truck.

This was all found on the first page of my search of "oil change" checking the "titles only" and in the 3rd gen forum. Took about 10 seconds and probably about 100 more I didn't care to link..

 

Imho, no. Synthetic oil is much better than the old conventional oils, but combustion is still the same messy process where in carbon deposits are created and have to go somewhere. True a lot go out the tail pipe, but much is still left for your oil and filter to soak up. Oil is cheap enough that I just change mine every 5k for peace of mind. Is it unnecessary? Maybe, but for the low cost i prefer the extra engine protection. No engine has ever failed due to too frequent oil changes.

 

Someone hasn't read the links or endless amounts of data proving otherwise you're wasting your money.

 

Maybe, but on a 35+k truck, and $10,000 engine, what's $20 every 6-12 months? And I have read some of the oil analysis stuff, just dont really buy into that line of thought. If you have to run a chemical analysis to prove it's ok, should you really be doing it?

 

Apparently the engineers that designed this engine have no idea what they’re talking about. Neither does anybody else who has proven 10k changes are okay

 

I sent a 3980 mile sample to Blackstone and posted the results. My advice is change it in the 2-4k mile range, then 10k/20k/30k/etc after that.

I fully agree with you, I took the oil it came with out at 1000 miles and was happy to watch the metallic particle leave my engine... The benefits, for my peace of mind, outweigh the increased cost of maintenance.

 

One thing I always thought about was how I've always been told to change the oil early just the first time due to wear in material becoming present in the oil. I work on jet skis and it does apply to all brands out there. However jet skis are a bit different (obviously) in the fact that they run at super high RPMs most of the time.

Anyway I'll probably have the oil changed (maybe not the filter) after about 1000 miles just for peace of mind, then go by the service intervals thereafter. Toyota may have my truck covered for 8 years...but I'll be covering it after that. It's the little things that make it a 300k mile truck vs a 150k mile truck.

 

Toyota has been doing this for years I was surprised when that was the schedule in my 2010 Prius. Never had a problem traded in 2017 with 120000 miles 12 oil changes. (well 11 the came with oil in it)

 

yes. ive done 160k miles in the 3rd gen thus far and had zero issues.

oils of today aren't what they used to be. they've much improved.

 

Rule of thumb... when in doubt, check THE OWNER'S MANUAL!

 

Personally, I know, 10k between oil changes with synthetic is ok. But, I still really want to do an after "break in" oil change at 1000 miles. There's always lots of crap in the oil after the break in period and I wouldn't want all that in there for 10k miles.

 

Engines are "broken in" at the factory before they even stick them under the hood. It's been that way for at least a decade...
