I usually drain and then strain my oil after every 852 miles. I strain it through coffee filters, this is the only way to get it clean. I throw the oil back in, now that it is cleaner. Every 2,500 miles I replace the oil filter. I change the oil every 5,000 miles just to be safe. 10,000 seems like too much... I have a mechanical engineering degree that I earned from Google University, so I'm pretty much an expert...

What brand of coffee filter do you use? Like, one of those shaped like a cone?

I'm not at 10,000 miles yet, and my oil has been changed as per the maintenance schedule.

    Oil Engineering Explained

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=Se8-W7rK0H4&feature=emb_logo

    Shell research engineer Shana Simmons:
:44 Why should I change my oil:
“as an engine burns fuel, it deteriorates the motor oil. Changing you oil helps to remove harmful contaminants and it replenishes the additives that have been depleted”.

2:43 - What is sludge and what causes it.
“Every-time your engine is running, byproducts from combustion build up and contaminate the motor oil. If contaminants build up inside your engine they can settle out and form sludge.
Using low-quality motor oil, neglecting to change your oil and maintenance issues can all lead to sludge forming”.

Your money, your truck, your choice

    Hope that helps

    Cheers!

I change my oil daily, thought that was wise for routine maintenance each morning.....

I, personally, do not care when anyone changes their oil... have no idea why these threads get posted... I never ask my friends when I should change my oil in my truck that I own.. but *shrugs*

Are these the same engineers that say:

-There is nothing wrong with the transmission-it is working perfectly as designed
-The 3.5L V-6 has plenty of power
-Feel free to safely tow 6,400 lbs all day long
-The seating position is perfect as is
    -Frame corrosion, what frame corrosion?
-Why would anyone want rear disk brakes when drums have been around for decades

Most of that is subjective. I personally feel the Tacoma has plenty of power for a truck, now if I bought a race car I would complain. TFL has tested Tacoma's ability to tow (max) without issue. The seat is also subjective, I have heard plenty of owners say they like it.. personally I hated it whey I never owned a Toyota till this year.
All vehicles driven in areas with salt/brine have rust problems (Just found out this myself from another thread)
And can you give source where drum brakes are not completely adequate for the rear? I am honestly curious because I tried to research and could not find a objective article that could prove that point.

So, I do stand behind engineers.. but hey if you can do better I am sure they would hire you. I hear that make quite a bit.

Inquiring minds just want to know, I think some people just want to do the right thing. Others maybe not so much.

The video below shows a vehicle with only 135K miles on the clock with maybe only a couple oil changes.
Notice the rear differential, transmission, p/s fluids are not mentioned as needing repair, but it’s a sure bet that the oils were not changed either and no damage is mention. But that could be because there’s no combustion going on in those components.

I realize this is an extreme sample, but it does show what the end result of combustion by products can be if they go unchecked.

if someone wants to replace the oil at 1k-5k-10k-15k intervals it doesn’t bother me either because its their money, their vehicle, their choice.

The automakers extend the warranty because they know is going to make it past the warranty, as the video shows (135k miles) at the least expense to them. And they all want to brag about the yearly operating cost of their product. And It’s deadly fight.

But as for me, I want the least amount of gunk in my engine, but it’s my money, my vehicle, my choice.

    Cheers
