Im 18 and ready to buy my first Truck, I love Toyotas especially Tundras and Tacomas and I'm having trouble deciding between:
a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4 Dr STD 4WD Extended Cab with 135k for 10k, (I would need a loan for it)

a 2007 Toyota Tacoma Base Regular cab with 150k for 5k

I only have about 5000 to my name and no transportation so I am not particularly picky but I would like 4wd because winters coming up and I live in Ohio. I like the way the extended cab looks more but I do not really need the extra room plus I would have to get a loan, my dad really doesn't like regular cabs also so I know I would get some crap if I got the Regular cabs

I have an access cab and love the extra room for guns, golf clubs or groceries. If you're travelling, there's room for a suitcase or duffel bag so your clothes aren't out in the weather.

AND, if you're Christmas shopping and your back windows are tinted, people can't see what's in your truck.

Get the double cab if you can get a loan from your dad with no interest :D. I'd only get a regular cab if you don't like people riding with you. I've owned both and the double cab is more useful all around.

I'd go with the 2007 reg cab. OK, I'm biased - I've got one. I'd always had extended cab trucks, but I love this reg cab. You might need the extra cab, but if you don't, stay out of debt and get the reg cab. They look better, too :):):)

I would take 4wd but at your age no loan is a great idea

As an 18 year old, you should NOT have any debt if you can avoid it. Get the single cab and don't look back. Begin your journey of truck buying experiences with no debt.

I had a single cab - within a year I traded for an access cab. The extra space is worth it....

I could always get an old 4 runner or sequoia or something instead of a truck, they're usually cheaper but I really like the trucks

I have considered a 1st gen tundra too but dang those things get expensive for a 20 year old vehicle even when they have 250k on them, if only I could find one for like 5,000

Actually I traded it for a Ridgeline - but that's for a different thread.

Whatever you decide to do, and that is your business, I honestly and firmly believe that staying out of debt is an extremely compelling factor in this. Maybe keep looking. Find something you can buy outright, maybe fix it up some on your own time scale, and sell it for more than you paid for it. Rinse and repeat. That's how I did it when I was your age. Patience is a virtue, and you've got time.

I am literally in the same boat as you, no debt is the way to go. If your working full time you still won't regret it. I will say though, you have to swap to better seats if the bench, 4 runners generally just swap, and a toneau or cap is a must for dry storage. 4wd is something I've always wondering if I regret not getting, but when a similar example to mine is 6 grand more, it's not worth it. The lsd is awesome and can get you most places with some 235/75/15s. My vote is regular cab, it wouldn't depreciate much more than it has. I can answer many questions about 5 lug trucks and they are are some, but know the limits of it. Added bonus is that some people see 25+ mpg on the highway, I've seen it on my truck. Some dont

It seems these days, most people want the extended cabs. I understand completely, if you need the extra room. That being said, I've driven the longer ones for work & hated every mile of them. For me it's reg. cab short bed, or nothing. And there's no way to make a long truck look as good as a short one. At 18, if you realize how handy it is to not have a monthly truck payment, you're way ahead of most 18 yr. olds. As always, just my opinion. Good luck !!!

Also the 2tr-fe 4 cylinder is super easy to work on. I got my 2014 with 120k for 9 grand. Ex commercial orkin truck.
