Question about mountain bikes

I am looking to get into mountain biking/trail riding. I have read the the other threads about everyones opinion on how to select a bike, good info. I was just wondering which bike brands to steer clear of and which brands have a good rep. All thought are welcome.

 

well... as you can tell by my user name, i know quite a bit about mountain bikes. Stay clear of the walmart bikes. go to a specialty bike dealer in your area. I ride Specialized myself. I love their products, I have had a rockhopper since 04' and have not had any issues with the frame. I beat the hell out of the thing too. I upgraded all my components though just because I worked at a bike shop at one point and could afford to.
Other good manufacturers:
Giant-ok bikes, a little on the cheaper side as far as components go but ok.
Cannondale- had one of these. awesome bikes, a little pricey
Specialized- awesome bikes, about mid range in price and decent components
Kona- mostly downhill bikes

What kind of riding do you want to do? Thats the big question.

As far as sizing goes. It is all personal preference. I have a frame that fits just right for casual XC stuff and then I have the 04 rockhopper with a little bit smaller frame for hitting the obstacles and jumps and such.

 

+1 on cannondale...had mine for 12 years now and it works just as awesome. Unfortunately I outgrew it...kinda small now.

A friend of mine is sponsored by Airborne bicycles. They seem pretty awesome for the money...probably will be my next bike.

 

ive had a trek before. it served its purpose till i upgraded to a full suspension.
