Aux Fuel Options Revisted.

I'd like to revisit and summerize additional fuel options as I have just started executing my Aux tank mod.

For discussions sake let's establish the goal as doubling the capacity thus your range based on ones driving style. That's 15 to 18 gallons depending on a 1st Gen configuration. Falling short or exceeding the goal and the tradeoffs will be considered in the discussion.

Fact a gallon of gas wieght is 6lbs one water 8.4 beer is about the same as water but whiskey is lighter than water because of its content of ethanol (grain alcohol), which is 21% less dense than water.

Gallon of whiskey weighs 7.7 pounds, which is 0.6 pounds (or 7%) less than a gallon of water. Trade-off #1 solved.

Goal fuel wt. is 90-108 lbs

Therefore let's also proceed from simple to complex.

I like the idea of jerry cans, since doing an integrated system means you're carrying all that extra stuff around even on shorter trips.

The spare tire tank is probably the best idea. I would think that if you spring a leak in your one HUGE tank, that'd be worse than springing a leak in one of your tanks.

Simplest idea (aside form jerry cans) would be to just rig up a switch operated pump to transfer fuel from the aux into the main tank. Then you wouldn't be messing with any of the factory fuel lines. When your fuel gauge gets to half tank or so, flip the switch and transfer some fuel.

hm, I don't want to carry around jerry cans all the time...

I'd build a drawer system that houses the kitchen requirements but also have a rack for 4 jerry cans. The drawer system would also be removable once its not needed. Can leave it on a stand in the garage and lessen any load on the tacoma when I'm using it as a daily.

See this thread concept 25 gallon deck tank in middle of bed, at the rear of the bed, side by side drawer sliders about 8 inch tall capped by 3/4 ply giving front below deck storage the full width of the bed.

Removeable 43 gallons capacity.

Right now thread is focused on the super cheap jug versions

You have to think about the rest of your gear that will either be in the bed or if you have a rack system with your tent up top,etc...etc...etc..

 

Everything is a trade off or expense.

Fuel is part of your gear no it's ands or butts.

Want to carry the maximum gear that your bed will carry you trade-off the value of going further buying cheaper gas before your return trip to civilization.

If you want to go to the end of the remotest road hammering miles until your bladder bursts and buy gas at $2.00 a gallon instead of $4.00 your going to have to leave some gear at home.

If you want max of everything a Taco is not the right fit especially a gen 1.

A gen 1 set up right is an affordable off-roader very close to a Jeep ferry's 2 passengers and enough gear for a month plus on the road.

If you need more of all the trade offs to increase your comforts you need to move a size up.

I'll trade-off fuel for a bunch of recovery gear I have never had to use and is just for looks on my rig.

 

Sorry there I hijacked my own thread a bit. Too excited over my new idea and pissed I did not think of it sooner.

Anyway we all love jugs. Some like them small, some just right and some like the big jugs.

Some like them high some like them low.

Some like plastic jugs some don't.

Some like 1 at a time some like 2 and some like 4

This is the thread for small juggs in any amount location or configuration you like.

No doubt, as long as I can keep 10 gallons on hand I'm good.
