I think you nailed it with this statement.

As someone who drove MT exclusively for 30+ years, I realized right away that this 3rd gen Taco AT was slightly different from any AT I had driven before - wife's cars, rentals, etc.

I found myself working the gas pedal/ AT engine braking somewhat like I used to drive my MT - leaving it in gear to regulate my speed.

Not sure that the above statement makes sense to anyone but myself, but I have never had any problems getting this truck to do exactly what I want.

I live in one of the most densely populated areas of the US with world class aggressive drivers everywhere. I see more and more 3rd gens on the road everyday here, so I am guessing this "dead zone" throttle might be isolated or more driver error than mechanical glitch, fwiw and apologies in advance to anyone who sees it different.

:rofl:I’ll have to remember this one. It sounds a lot better than saying that they drive like assholes. :D
I was in the land of the big black hats again yesterday and saw a car in the intersection that was rammed by a school bus. You guys don’t fuck around, move your ass or be run over.

Its happened to me. my subdivision is about 100 yards away from a stop sign (blind turn) and people floor it from the sign and are on my ass when turning right. The problem isnt the truck its the people driving too fast for the road. Ive heard OV tune will solve the acceleration issue

Let me guess. Another buyer who didn't take an extensive pre purchase test drive?

“ I don't care what nobody says, THE TRANSMISSION IN THE 3rd GEN IS A SAFETY HAZZARD. Period. Totally, completely inexcusable Toyota would put a transmission in a vehicle that performs this poorly”

that’s a double negative my friend, implying you care about what others say.

that being said, it sounds like you’re just bitching because you’re allowed.

If you don’t like the truck trade it in or take it on a better test drive next time.

I don't know why people buy these "self shifting transmissions." Pure witchcraft. Nothing good can come of it.

That doesn’t quite add up to me. Buys a truck with a transmission he hates, makes stupid driving decisions, then points the finger at Toyota.

It's only been a couple of weeks since my re-flash was done, and I can second that mine shifts much smoother and don't have acceleration issues I once did. I have a hard time sometimes with a possible placebo effect (I want to believe it is better), but I sincerely believe there is a significant improvement.

I thought about OVtune until I had the TSB reflash done. While I get they are in the business of making money, and I realize there are lots of folks that swear by it, a $700 software solution is not worth every penny to me. Before you flame me, I am also of the opinion that others are free to spend their money how they choose, and if their calculation is that it's worth it to them, that's just fine, I harbor no disregard.

Odd since you have a 19 and I thought they fixed the logic, myself included on my 16 and both 17s had this issue, I remember trying to pull/merge into traffic and almost died because of it. I haven't seen it happen on any of my 19s.

    Operator error. Transmission is fine.

Some of you guys are cutting it too close if the time it takes for the transmission to downshift puts you in a potential life or death situation.

Pretty assumptive/broad brushed response. I see you have a 19, what OP was describing happened to me on my 16 and both 17s before they supposedly updated the logic and I havent experienced it yet on any of my 19s lifted or stock. The "engine surge" thing has been discussed by tons of people on here, it has nothing to do about safe driving and is very much a flaw in the trucks power delivery.

No flames from me my man. What’s right for me may not be right for everyone and I’m okay with that. Seems to be a rare stance in this day and age though.
