    I agree with this.

Ok so theres something that has been bothering me lately and I’d like some thoughts from the fit bros, especially those of you with kids (which I think is only 1-2).

Most of my nieces and nephews are older (13 to 24) who were babies a long time ago, but my brother is fostering a 6 mo and 18mo old that hopefully will become permanent additions to the fam.
I’m getting old, almost 29, hubs almost 32. No kids yet but maybe soon so we have discussions like “what would we do?”.

I see so many kids around me getting fed absolute shit food and its starting to provoke some emotions.
18 mo old gets up, is being given cows milk right away, then is given Cheerios, then gets to have juice, then maybe some yogurt or cheese its.
So we start the day with pure sugar and carbs. Worse yet the dairy is all low fat.
Lunch is pizza with fruit cocktail. Dinner is pasta with some more fruit cocktail.

    I want to scream.

Like are we just too lazy to cook for our kids or what? Its really hard for me to not want to say something. These are educated loving people but I’m seeing the number one reason for the obesity epidemic occur and its tough. Especially knowing these kids’ future relationship with food and weight is being formed as we speak. And many of us have expressed the frustration that our relationship with food has been the largest factor to overcome when reaching our physique goals (it has been for me and still is).

Like what are your thoughts on watching what your kids eat to promote health but also a psychologically healthy relationship with food?
Especially since we here are athletes and understand the importance of quality nutrition.

How are you going to raise your kids differently knowing what you know now from experience?

I’m not a fit bro but have a 4 year old, 2 year old, and a 4 day old..

Lesson number one of being a parent: tend your own flock, not anyone else’s.

There’s a lot of people who aren’t fit to parent, yet they do. You can’t stop them from railroading their kids into a shitty young adult/adult life. So, you focus on doing the best for your own kids because that’s under your control. Whether that’s diet and food habits, exercise, using a screen to keep your kids occupied, or whatever else.

In your case I’d just make sure when/if the kids are at your place to visit that they have other options to explore that may foster new food requests at home. My daughter (4) asks for extra broccoli in her school lunch. It’s all about parenting, and unfortunately a lot of parenting is about time management and prioritizing and that’s where food and parent-child interaction tends to suffer.

    This is great advice.
When I was there this weekend I was maintaining my keto diet. I just kept trying to feed him stuff I ate.

Get them exposed to new foods they may like.

I just see what they do and say to myself, yeah not letting my kids eat that.

That’s the best thing to do now, without kids. Lol

See the problems and plan on avoiding them.

No matter what you do, how fit and well-fed your future kids are, that same sibling/in-law will have something to say about how you're raising them or what they think you're doing wrong.

^^^^ That is the biggest reason why non-parents providing advice to parents is never be received well. No matter what the intention is.

I feel like its all not well received period. For some reason when people have kids any opposing idea is insulting.
I stay out of it no matter how sometimes I’d like to discuss it. Even if its not from the perspective of suggesting people do something different but to ask why they do something.
I wish it wasn’t so taboo to discuss these things but thats the way it is.

I don’t want to be a total food Nazi with my kids (thats not good either) but knowing what I know now after having to change my diet for physique/fitness/disease treatment goals I just think its important to raise kids with a healthy diet and for them to realize 95% we eat for nurishment, 5% enjoyment. That way my kids are less likely to have weight issues and develop chronic disease. And in the event my child gets diagnosed with Celiac for example they have the tools and mindset to adjust their lives accordingly rather than feel like its a major life trauma because it means they can’t eat certain foods again.

I was Dx with Hashi‘s 10 years ago. I’m still adjusting my life diet wise to cope with that. I’d like them to handle it better than me.

I’d say that changes with additional kids but only in the sense that you realize things that are less important in practice than they were in theory. At least in own my experience.

My kids got zero processed sugar until their first birthday party when they got a cupcake. After that, treats and desserts are typically all homemade, anyway, so they aren’t overloaded either in quantity of sugar or in processed ingredients and the like. None of my kids had screen time until they were 2, and when they do it is rarely on a phone (if it is, it’s watching our videos or looking at pictures, maybe watching a music video on YouTube), they watch a few PBS Kids shows on the TV like Daniel The Tiger, and they have some older Disney movies.. things you’d have watched as a kid. Other than that, they have to try at least one bite of new foods at dinner, and if it’s something I don’t think they’ll like (like curry or tikka masala), they basically get what the core is, so chicken and rice or whatever, and vegetables. They enjoy it. Breakfast varies but they can have whole milk, homemade almond milk with whole grain Cheerios, a piece of fruit, and they’ll get an egg or some protein on top of that. Lunch varies too, but vegetables and proteins is what they’re used to and what they ask for.

It’s easy to get into the nuggets and ketchup as primary food group rut and it’s immensely difficult to get out of it, kids can destroy patience like nothing else and it’s easy to give in to them just to stop the crying. But as we know, that comes at a cost later, so we try to stick with our guns and let them have decisions, and most of the time they’re on the same page as us. Started preschool this fall with my oldest and she’s brought home some influence from other kids habits but nothing too problematic.

Parenting is very hard, just do your best. Figuring out your style before you have kids I think is a big asset, as long as you’re in the right mindset and have the will to stick to it when the going gets tough, you’ll be okay.
