Unless I have it in writing from Toyota Corporate that I would be getting a new frame, I wouldn't even bother. That truck is a lost cause.

I could run the vin to see if it’s covered. But it looks like it won’t be. For 3 grand if he did his own work a new frame swap would make it a damn good truck. But it’s a lot
    Of work for most people

After reading the horror stories about frame swaps from Toyota, that's gonna be a big no from me. I'd rather fly to a state with no rust issues and drive a rust-free truck back.

I do it myself these days... soo I’d rock a frame swapped truck.

When did your truck last move under it’s own power, three four years ago?

    Buy it as parts truck.
Buy a rollover for the frame.
    Buy tube and a welder.

    Instant rock crawler!

but I suspect if you wanted to do that, you wouldn’t have made this thread.

    Don’t buy the truck.

LOL at the people here suggesting to just "toss a new frame under it". Yeah okay. You go right ahead.

Shame really, had someone caught that in time (before in service time frame expired) that truck would be sporting a new frame. All that carnage didn't happen within the last year or so.

No one says it’s easy but I have done several frame off restos so it’s not impossible by any stretch.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
Im guessing you don't know about the 16 year extended frame warranty on all 1st and 2nd gen trucks. But like I said to OP, run the vin through Toyota to make sure the previous owner registered in time and the warranty applies.

I know about the replacement campaign. But I stand by what I said. Only, and only if I have it in writing that this truck with this VIN will have the frame replaced I would not bother.

It’s not a small job by any means.

But there are people out there that do it. Hell I’ve done 10-12 frame swaps at work on 2nd gens. 3 on first gens.

It is a shame no matter what ends up happening. I’ve been eyeing that truck for years as it’s been sitting in that guys driveway for a very long time. In passing I asked if he wanted to sell about a year ago and he said no. It’s a shame but maybe I will get the VIN and ask Toyota about it.

I mean y u technically never said what your intentions were for said truck so....... if you plan on streeting it then no. But if it’s a project truck or a dedicated off road rig then why not. The asking cost is good. The frame is bad. If the truck is mechanically sound why not go ahead and get it then as other have said have Toyota swap the frame under recall if eligible, or part it out to fund another build. It’s kinda like flipping a house. You gotta gamble to win.

I’d buy it for the street or to flip it. At this point the only way is if I know Toyota will replace the frame.

That is a shame. It all boils down to when it was originally sold new. Less than 12 years, you get free frame. 1 day more than 12 years and no frame for you. The only way you’re going to know is to get the VIN and check it. If you could have bought it a year ago, you would have been guaranteed a new frame. At this point, it’s highly doubtful.

Or buy it and write up a DIY - Frame replacement tutorial with pictures for the masses to read, maybe?
