I’m looking to get a 3rd gen sr5 ac 4x4. I plan on taking it off-road. I live in Florida so there’s lots of sand. So is the sr5 adequate off road? Or are locking hubs on the OR necessary? I actually like the looks of the sr5 better than the OR. More subtle. Maybe this has been covered but I’m new here.

The OR has an electronic locker. Remember, lockers can be added. I got the OR because the combination of interior features, looks, and my desire for a stick shift led me to the Sport or OR. At that point, since the prices were the same, I chose the OR because I like the look slightly better and I would eventually want to add a locker and skids anyway.

I'd say if you're satisfied with the features in the SR5, you'll be fine. If you start to have trouble off road, a locker can be added down the line for less than the difference in price between the two. And it likely will be more robust.

I have had no problems with my Sr5 off road so far. You'll definitely want some better tires but they are plenty capable. Personally if I need a locker I'd rather have one installed that I can use whenever I want as opposed to only in 4lo like in the OR.

4x4 Tacomas are surprisingly capable vehicles. Get a V6, there is no substitute for power (IMHO). For running in sand air down the stock tires and you will be fine. You will need to get/buy an extraction kit.

The traction control in the sr5 is pretty impressive. In 4low it even locks up wheels that are off the ground so the ones with traction can get power. PS Welcome to tw

    Welcome!

I decided to go with the SR5. In my neck of the woods I don’t have much sand I can drive on but I can find the mud if I really want it. More likely i’d find ruts, washouts, rock or snow. My SR5 even with the limited slip diff can get me into just about any terrain I might want to tackle. Lockers, even just a rear would enable me to crawl at a lower speed, with a limited slip I would need to tackle obstacles carrying a bit more speed.

i’m looking at the ARB air locker for the rear and I’m not looking to crawl over boulders with my truck, but getting into snow with a load on, a rear locker would be nice to have

You’ll be fine with the SR5. I have the SR and it does everything I need it to do and has the same traction control features as the SR5. Add a locker later if you feel you need it.

SR5 should be fine. Tires are the main thing. Add a good set and you should be good to go.

I have an OR, but that's only so I can tell my friends about all the cool off road features it has as it sits in a covered parking lot :anonymous:

Down the road if you want a rear locker its easy to do, and you don't need to be in 4 Lo to use it.
Your truck stock will go a lot of places.

A shovel comes in handy. Not being sarcastic. If you run in sand you might get so stuck no locker, crawl control or anything but a shovel and hard work will get you out of.

A good jack and a sizeable piece of wood helps too. Re-fill those holes if you truly are stuck!

OP, If I'm reading your post right you asked about having the locking hubs like on the OR. All the 3rd Gen 4x4's use an actuator to bring in the 4WD to the front wheels, not locking hubs like the older 4x4's ( had an 87 and 2001 Nissan that had auto locking hubs). I think that was what you were asking about and not the rear locker on the OR. If I'm wrong I'll go away, if not, that's your answer... either way I think your going to be 100% fine with any of these vehicles in 4x4 trim.

Looking to buy a Tacoma soon.
I feel the same way as you. im on East Coast of Maryland on the beach, I only go off road on beach and occasional mud. Lockers and crawl control is OVERKILL for that purpose. and i agree i like the look of sr5 better actually.. i dont like the OR's stickers and plastic fenders. good luck!

The SR5 is awesome and it's what I have, but it doesn't come with bragging rights which is all that really matters here and at the mall :/

That's funny right there....the SR5 is much maligned, much like Phil Kessel!!! Both are pretty good equipment though!!!

I run in the sand 20 or 30 times a year - i have a sport but no rear locker so I believe we are on the same level of capability.

I have 6112s and 275 BFG KO2s and I have never gotten stuck, even in the soft sand of the Carolinas (honestly i rarely ever air down below 30psi that I run on the street). It is probably more about driving strategy than anything in the sand - still i always keep a set of MaxTrax in the bed.
