2016 Tacoma TRD Off-Road Access Cab
Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
    1. Bought my 2016 Tacoma TRD Off-Road (Access cab) in July 2018. I am in Canada, bought in Penticton BC.
    2. Truck was 2.5 years old, with low 9800km on it. Just over 6,000 miles. Within 3 year warranty period, and I paid $1800 to buy extra 6 years of warranty.
    3. On day one, I drive over a big speed bump (drive this daily as it is located on my street).
    4. LOUD clunk/snap on the down travel, like a recoil sound. I have attached short video of sound it is an MP4 file which is in the attached Trucksound.zip. My wife sitting in passenger seat holding my mobile phone for recording. :)
Turn your speakers up, you will be shocked at how loud it is. I have heard that over 500 times in 1 year.
You can see from the up/down movement in the truck that it occurs on the down travel over the bump.
    5. Also attached is pic of the damaged #1 body mount.
    6. I call the Toyota dealer to complain. I go back to see them. We cannot recreate noise, as there are no speed bumps of that type near their dealership.
    7. They suspect it might be skid plate related, so they put some soft spacers in the plate.
    8. Few days later, no change. I report back to them. Told to drive it, and I guess wait for something to happen.
    9. The noise happens about 50% of the time on these speed bumps. Do not get the noise on small speed bumps, or in potholes or such. Just the big speed bumps.
    10. I live with the noise for the past year, but it drives me mad. I have to crawl over speed bumps to avoid embarassment as the noise is so loud, can be heard a block away.
    11. I start to communicate with dealer again, and send their rep repeated emails of what might be the problem, the most likely being body mount #1 as per some other owners on the forum.
    12. Dealer checks underside of truck, u-joints, front end, frame, etc cannot find an issue. Cannot recreate on test drive as no speed bumps of that size in their area.
    13. I have been under the truck multiple times, checking torque on EVERY structural component. I could find nothing. I have repaired my own trucks and cars for over 45 years. Brake jobs, carb rebuilds, shocks, leaf springs, water pumps, starter motors, etc.
    14. For the full year, I search Tacoma forums, and find some with new TAco's less than one year old and low mileage have similar problem, and it is body mount #1 on front passenger side that has failed.
    15. I take it to a local front end shop with 50 years experience. They cannot find the problem either. They watch my video, and shocked the noise is that loud. They say maybe just have Toyota replace the mount as other Taco owners have had same problem. Low cost repair, can't hurt. If it fixes issue, great then warranty related as issue reported soon after purchase.
    16. Over a week ago, the dealer installs the new #1 body mount at my request.
    17. PROBLEM SOLVED. I have driven the same speed bump now over 100 times, fast, slow, braking, accelerating, not a whisper. In fact I noticed the front end felt much tighter the first time I drove over the bumps. Not surprising.
    18. Toyota tells me not a warranty issue, despite this being reported when the truck was 2.5 years old and well inside 3 year warranty.
    19. I am left now to document this and deal directly with Toyota Canada. Last Toyota I every buy if they do not honor what is a 100% warranty issue. What do they lose? A customer for life, or cough up the $400 I paid for the work? I was just about to upgrade my wifes RAV4 to a new one. That will not happen unless they honor the warranty. This is a matter of principle, not the cash. I care less about the cash. What is right is right, and they should honor their warranties. My wife will get a Honda CRV if this is not covered under what is a warranty case.
    20. This issue is documented in a USA TSB, but not in a Canadian TSB. Here is USA TSB.
      TSB #T-TT-0490-18-Rev
NHTSA ID #10146003Summary: TT: Some 2016-2018 model year Tacoma vehicles may exhibit a squeak or rattle noise from the FR RH (No.1) Body Mount Bushing when driving over uneven roads or bumps. Make sure to confirm that the noise is coming from the FR RH (No.1) Body Mount.
