I thought I read that 3rd gen (2016+) TPMS is not compatible with 2015. Is that correct?
I bought some 2019 TRD wheels and tires that included TPMS. My truck came with SR5 Steelies.
I know the steel TPMS does not work in alloy wheels....

Had the wheels mounted at Discount Tire and they reset the TPMS. For a few days all was well, but now I have TPMS light on.

Assume that the only solution is to buy new tpms sensors compatible with my model?

Last thing I should point out is that the steelies are in my garage everyday. Dont know if they are somehow still transmitting to the truck and causing a conflict. I figured once the new set is paired, the old ones should not register.

Also- just to confirm; 2015 spare does not have tpms correct?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Spare stopped having TPMS I think in 2011.

You absolutely can use a steel TPMS in an alloy wheel.

Third gen TPMS won’t work with second gen trucks.

Somebody in the 3rd gen forum will definitely buy your 2019 TPMS sensors. This will help offset the cost of new 2nd gen aluminum wheel sensors.

Yes, you can use the steel wheel sensors in your aluminum wheels if you flip them over. BUT... if you ever get a flat, it will destroy the sensor. Also, if you have tires dismounted and you don't tell the tire shop what's inside, they may destroy a sensor. I would just do it right and buy new sensors.

What do you plan to do with your steel wheels? If you plan to use them for snow wheels, there are a few options on what you do with your TPMS situation.

Thanks to all for the replies.
I live in Florida....so no use for Steel wheels for winter tires. Likely headed to Craigslist when done with the sensor issue.

I called my local Discount Tire Direct and they said there is no issue with using steel sensors.....but didnt mention the "upside down placement" requirement......so I guess I may give it a shot. Although, at $30 bucks a tires to dismount off steel and mount onto alloy and remount steel tires....may not be cost effective considering the risks of damage due to flat and tire removal listed in the post above.

Prob leaning towards paying the $60 per sensor and selling the old ones to offset the cost.

You can buy second gen TPMS here all day for $100 shipped or less. Someone posted a link not too long ago for OEM TPMS and they were $30 something a piece and brand new.

@coach23 This thread is worth a read. There's a link to Denso sensors for $37 each. Once you have the new TPMS sensors in your hand, it's not necessary for the tire shop to completely dismount, remount, and balance the tires. They only need to break the outside bead loose, pop in the sensor, and air back up. Then they need to plug into the OBD2 connector and program your truck.

I have '19 trd wheels on my '15....dealer swapped the old ones into the newer wheels. They suggested that was the easiest solution. All is well after 10 months.

It should be. They installed your old TPMS into the new wheels. That’s the only way it works. Your truck doesn’t know or care about the wheels they’re mounted in, just wants to see that data signal.

Yep, and since JC15 has a TRD, he already has aluminum wheel sensors.
