I have some new T slot channels I will be mounting to our campershell and am wanting to find a way to mount our spare tire up there to free up bed space. Wondering if anyone has any idea on an inexpensive roof rack idea for now until we get a bumper to mount the spare on. I was thinking about unistrut but not sure how to attach and lock the spare tire to it in a bombproof way. Any ideas? Thanks!

This might sound stupid by stating the obvious, but why is your tire not under the bed (stock location?). Bigger tires? Do you have an on-board air system installed there?

I know that 33's typically fit under there, even with a tow hitch. You just have to cut the tabs that the tire slides in to.

As for the campershell, is it rated for putting weight up there? Not all are, and if you're putting your own slots on it, my suspicion is that it might not handle the weight effectively.

Multiple reasons to not mount it under the truck. The most immediate being that someone cut the cabling and stole the spare. Also not the easiest to get it out from under there if needed off road and in some sloppy stuff. Also it is a bit over sized and at some point I will be going bigger as well. Seems like an easy option to put it up top. Campershell is rated for plenty of weight. Have any examples of unistrut racks for me?

Who the hell steals a spare tire?! That's pretty jacked up!

I did a little searching and found this form e-trailer. It's not Fort Knox or anything, but at least it's a lock, lol.

If that doesn't seem strong enough, you could always just use a ratchet strap as well. There are plenty of inexpensive roof baskets out there (<$150), and maybe just bolt that directly to your slot channel?

I saw that mount earlier today but it’s for 4 or 5 lug wheels. I wonder if they make one for 6 lug wheels though. I may have to just get a roof basket but was hoping for something more modular and adaptable for a few other things as well.

Just do what I do, hang out in the raw materials isle of home depot or the metal fab place until something inspires you.

But seems like that lock thing could work even if just thru one lug hole... maybe?
