Tough situation, as a current 3 dog owner id say let nature take its course

We have 2 Schnauzers that are siblings. So...will the other one freak out if something happens??? Tough decision. My kids are 17 & 20 so they will handle it better than the wife. And we might get lucky and he live out a normal life span.

If something happens the other will grieve as well.

We had to put my 18yr old down last year. The others would hunt for him for a while afterwards. I think it helped them to have others there.

Dogs are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. The other will definitely be missing the sibling. Just a thought but have you considered bringing a puppy into the situation? Rather than vet bills, you could use funds for the new pup

Oh, I’m all for it, but the wife doesn’t want another baby to raise. Our daughters are not home that much and I work away from home for 2 weeks at a time. So the wife will have to do everything to get a puppy in to the routine. She has been the main care taker for the dogs for the last 15 years. I would love to get a Vizsla or Weimaraner but big dogs inside could be a problem. And we are 50 y.o. and kind of looking forward to being empty nesters and a new dog could limit us for traveling. I know just excuses. A puppy is not out of the question. We just need to see what happens with old Zach

Totally understand. The dogs definitely limit our family travels as well. Cant recall the last time wife and I were able to go away at the same time

I totally feel for you. This is such a shitty situation and only you and your family can make the decision, but based on your dog's age and the prognosis, I'd say let nature take it's course. With that in mind, as I'm sure you will do, you need to constantly be watching his quality of life.
    God Bless, brother.

More crappy news. We heard back from the veterinarian this evening. Zach, our male Schnauzer, has an enlarged heart, an enlarged spleen, and an enlarged liver. That’s just way too much stuff to deal with. The doc said he should not be hurting, just a little winded. He may be ok for a couple of years but not a long life.

Thanks man. It happens. We will just watch him and hope for the best. If he starts to get bad, then we will go to our regular vet and do what is best for his quality of life. You never know, he might make it for years b/c he’s one tough SOB.
