3rd gen audio build - Joying tacoma headunit

Thank you all for the hard work going in to this product, its usage, and its potential as I am seriously looking at this Joying Unit. I have a 2019 DCLB SR which I believe is the base Entune system with the volume knob located in the upper left location. I have yet to pull the factory unit out to see what’s all there to be done. So to make this as painless as possible, I would need the following?

Regarding this mount, If one uses the factory center bezel from an Entune Premium factory unit, they would not need to trim the bezel? I have already found one and am hoping I can secure it for this use. Only the Scosche mount would need to be trimmed correct?

Just to eliminate any extra cables in the dash and promote free air space around the Joying HU for cooling.

A front facing camera can be installed to work. The Car Solutions front camera can be installed in conjunction with the Joying HU as per arcenik on a 2nd Gen. Does the CS controller still allow the steering controls to function as programmed or does it interfere with the operation of the HU? Would one just plug the harness in before or after the Joying harness?

Is the sound volume equivalent to the factory head unit? I mainly just want to have decent volume for now and mayber install better speakers and amps or just an OEMAudio+ in the future.

If you get the radio bezel from a TRD model (which you need for this radio), you'll only need the Scosche mount for the brackets. The brackets will need to be cut down a little bit to fit (about 1/4" from what I remember, but measure first). I ended up buying the Scosche mount for an SR as it was $5 less than the model for a TRD. Brackets are the same in both kit, just the bezel is different.

 

Sound seems pretty good, almost want to say its better than the Entune but I'm not an audiophile.

 

Thanks for the info, I wasn't able to get the used trim bezel, so I may invest in a new one that would fit this unit. Just a question but does this HU work with Torque and Carista? What ODB reader would you all recommend for use? I intend to leave it plugged in the vehicle. I have the BAFX reader and based on the reviews, it seems to be one of the most trouble free.

 

mine came with torq, its in a file folder, just the apk in there to install your self

Im not using any OBD reader on mine right now, I dont do anything that requires me monitor things and im under full warranty still. When i start towing, offroading or get out of warranty then I will get a reader.

There is a somewhere in this thread where a certain reader didnt work for the person and they had to order a different one.

 

I’ve used both Torque Pro and OBD Fusion with this HU. The OBD reader needs to be based off the ELM327, nothing nicer than that will work. I have a good Bluetooth OBD reader and it would not connect. Had to buy a cheap $10 Amazon one to be able to connect.

I have since ditched the Bluetooth version for a USB wired OBD reader as I found that I couldn’t use my phone’s Bluetooth if I wanted to use the Bluetooth OBD reader at the same time. The USB wired OBD connects to the HU USB 2.0 connector with a USB hub so that my lower dash USB is also connected to the USB 2.0.

 

I am a new Toyoto owner. New Taco owner. And new to Tacomaworld.
So far, this has been the best forum I've read. Granted, I'm a new member, but a search for a new Android head unit brought me to a YouTube video (the OP's) which subsequently brought me here...to this excellent topic.

I've read all 19 pages. I was almost sold on getting a Alpine 9 Halo until I read about the Joying. The name almost turned me off, but after reading all of this, it goes to show you can't judge a head unit by its name alone.

I've been using my Samsung Tablet S5 as my head unit. The tablet fits perfectly between the 2 air vents, with the edges right on the trim. So I mounted 2 very thin strips of velcro to the trim and to my tablet. I use an Android app, Head Unit Reloaded, as the OP mentioned before. I used an OTG USB-C, plug it into my phone, and Android Auto comes up automatically on my tablet. I paired the tablet with my Taco. So if I'm not using Android Auto, I can use whatever other app is on my tablet. Then I just grab my tablet and head into work or home or wherever. I use my tablet for just about everything. Graphic arts on the side. Note taking at work. Entertainment at home. So it works great. The only problem is that when it's on my dash, it covers the OEM Entune unit, which covers my back up camera.

So I'm just going to install an Android head unit.

Question:

1. I saw others mentioning it, but I couldn't find where it was confirmed if a second camera can be hooked up. I would like to have a front camera. Looking at this one because of the hidden cool factor (

You can add a front camera, though Ive only heard of people using the anytime backup camera system that merges both camera signals into a toggle switch.

No real need to replace the OEM backup camera as its plug and play for the headunit, I have seen people try to get a better resolution camera, but I dont think they had good luck and ended up with worse resolution.


BTW, I too wanted to get the halo from alpine, but in the end I didnt want the screen sticking out, I didnt want the alpine branding sticking out to show people I have aftermarket. I wanted everything to fit as clean and flush and factory as possible.

 

I have both a front and rear camera through the anytimebackupcamera switch with the Joying HU. The HU cannot switch between the front and rear without an external switch (anytimebackupcamera).

As for an aftermarket back up camera, I've tried that with a custom 3d printed mount. The quality was better with the stock camera, which is not very good.

 

@5nahalf Any issues with the Joying HU? How are the operating temperatures? Any problems with thermal throttling and overheating?

I am pretty familiar with Joying. Unfortunately, I did not have all that great of an experience with them in the past. I had two of their other android HUs in my previous vehicle, neither one lasted a year. One had a screen that would cut out intermittently, the other one overheated and would start rebooting within a half hour, even faster if I was running maps. Replaced the second Joying with a Pumpkin (where do these brand names come from??) and that has been utterly flawless, so I know that these head units can be amazing. Based on a couple bad head units, I am just a little gun-shy of the Joying brand.

 

Sofar everything is running good. google play music was having a crashing fit the other day, but that seems to of resolved itself.

Though I will say I have grown a bit tired of the interface on the unit, I feel like all of the audio sources should be skinned and reorganized for a android headunit. Many of them just are not very driving friendly, my music apps dont have a dark theme, so at night its a white screen thats blinding.

I am on the search for something else now, something better. Im not sure if I will be going with another android unit (9.0 would be nice) or if I will be switching over to one of the name brand car headunits and just running carplay.

I would really like to see a headunit that has some rgb outputs with zones (footwell, rock lights, underglow, that kinda crap) along with some customization to match the truck.

 

Thanks, that is good to hear. I'm seriously considering waving one in, though I am also looking at the Dasaita (sp) one too, as well as some of the aftermarket options.

I completely agree with you when it comes to the apps and appearance. To be honest, though the hardware is solid, the interface on the Pumpkin is even worse than it was on the Joying and I have less options for customization. I switched to using AutoMate for a frontend, that seems to work pretty well.

The ATOTO had wiring to integrate the steering wheel controls, so I didn't have to add anything for that.

I was able to connect the factory back up camera, and I also added a front camera in the grill. ATOTO has a built in DVR for an ATOTO dash camera:

I've done 2 software updates so far with no issues, and I've loaded every app I wanted, including kodi. I plan to delete the JBL eventually. These android head units are great!

Hello Selkiesa, have a the same problem with my 2019 Tacoma with JBL, the fade control does not work correctly, one thing I noticed when I found out about this problem, I re-connected back the OEM radio,
the fade control works good on the OEM radio,
while I had the OEM radio connected and running all speakers "normal" I disconnected the "blue" connector that connects to the green and purple wires ( Joying rear speakers)
but the rear speakers still sound good.
I know this is confusing but to me that means that the "blue" connector is NOT for rear speakers. In other words the the green and purple wires coming out
of the Joying unit are not connected anywhere.
I been trying to find a drawing for the wiring of the JBL system,
but anyway, I noticed your post in this thread are from back in July - 2019, did you find a solution?

Hello lilmike, I installed this same model Joying radio on my 2019 Tacoma with JBL audio system, I'm having problems with the rear speakers not working properly, but if your truck does not have JBL system the radio works perfect.
