Have you ever seen brake pads separate?

    Has anyone ever seen this happen to brake pads? BOTH sides, inner pad. Outer one was fine.

    looks like original pads in a salt state of a 14 year old vehicle....

    Had EXACTLY the same thing happen on an '06 Mustang with [then] about 60,000 on the pads. Southern Vancouver Island driven all it's life; no salt/brine to speak of.

    I always grease the pins when I rotate the tires. On a bright note, pins came right out! ;) .

    Heck Dianna, you still had more life on those pads if they hadn't separated. :) I live in Ohio also in snow belt and my underbelly of truck is rusty also.

    Yep I did my sisters brakes on her 08 liberty and they looked even worse, the pad material had even disintegrated a bit it was crazy. Her parking brakes were rusted seized too, those drums were real fun to get off...

    There are multiple ways of attaching the friction material to the backing plate at the brake pad factory. Some are cheaper / less durable than others:



    What brand were these pads? How many years have they been installed? Did you service the caliper every two years per the Toyota maintenance booklet?

    Some pad mfrs cut corners on corrosion protection. I got Hawk-brand pads for my Subaru just two years ago; the paint is already flaked off from the backing plate. In my experience, Toyota OEM and Akebono pads don't suffer from this.

    Theres a reason oem cost more and it’s not just because the dealer is selling them.

    Usually it's because Toyota puts on a 300% markup and the dealer adds another 40%... However, Toyota's clout means they get better quality from the supplier at any given cost.

    In my experience, Centric Premium (and StopTech) rotors are more corrosion resistant than OE; Wagner drums are more corrosion resistant than OE. Pads I would go with OE.
