Processor called yesterday and said the meat from my wife’s deer was ready. I went over to pick it up late this evening and they were skinning 3, a big doe and 2 yearlings from this year.

It doesn’t bother me, my dad used to do it when I was a kid. There weren’t many deer around and we were poor and needed meat. Now a days, there’s plenty of deer around. I’d ask dad, why’d you shoot the babies? He’d say “I shot the big one and they just stood there”. He also shot what he thought was a big buck and turned out to be a doe, it was standing at the edge of a corn field and he thought it had a large rack, lol.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve killed some small deer in my life, mostly because they were by themselves and I can’t judge how big they are by themselves. I don’t think there’s any way I could shoot a momma and 2 babies though.

    Thank you sir!

    He sure is! Thanks

Perfect caliber for Texas deer and any exotics we may run into. Don’t understand guys shooting 300WM for a 140lb deer lol

Thanks! Yeah this guy made it probably 100yds

    Sounds like a good idea!

Winchester Deer season XPs. They do a number. I recovered this one last year

Those are deadly rounds! I use them in my .270...they work amazing. Popped an elk at 341yds and it went maybe 15yds at most down hill and was done. Only reason it went that far was because it was at the bank edge and when I shot it stood there for a second then stumbled down the hill...had it been on flat land I bet it would have just stood there and dropped.

Hope your seasons are going well! I filled my mule deer buck tag and cow elk tag a few weeks ago. DIY, public land, OTC tags. #keepitpublic

Well final weekend of B zone in CA was the last weekend in October. I shot this guy right after daybreak on the 25th and carried him off the damn hill and across a creek by myself. It wasn't a long carry but it was steep and fucked. My buddies who showed up at 10:30 were surprised to see me in camp drinking beer and sitting down until they walked around the corner and saw him hanging. What an awesome way to end my season. Hang weight at the butcher was 97lb. Got 65lbs back. Not bad for a coastal black tail!

To get 75 back thats a bit much above average butchers. Something seems off in the numbers

I meant to type 65 but still... I'm skeptical about that as well. I pulled the tenders out and cooked them after skinning him at camp and yet I got a small package labeled "tenders" from the butcher. Im starting to not really trust this butcher, and I think the next one I get ill teach myself how to process everything.

If you're able to, always process it yourself! It can be a pain in the ass but it's something I take a lot of pride in. It's not hard, just tedious.

so I worked as a meat cutter for 6 years and learned a lot but didn’t do venison, so these guys really explained it well. Also have some great pig stuff. Now I process all my own and have a majority (minus a band saw and sausage stuffer and walk in cooler:spending: ) of the equipment which is the biggest pain to get.
