Did an oil change on my 17 TRD sport rwd. Used Mobil 1 extended performance. Used the mc-251a filter. But the small and large o-rings were not on the filter originally. Tried to use the large one but popped down the filter housing when torqued down.
The old filter that the previous owner used was snug in the filter housing. The mobil 1 cartridge has slight play. Kind of loose. Anything to worry about?

Sorry guys first time dealing with a cartridge type filter. Foreign to me. Used to replacing the whole filter.

Well seeing as the closest Toyota dealership is over an hour from my house. I went with the mobil 1 filter.

I order the OEM filters online and have them shipped to me. I couldn't get the drain plug cap for the filter housing un-done this time. The entire housing spun off instead, made it quite a messy oil change.

Does the Mobil1 filter kit come with the drain nipple for the filter housing?

Your best bet is to stick with a Toyota Filter Element as the guys above suggested, Amazon and EBay sell them in bulk of 5 or 10 and also come with new drain plug gaskets.

Make sure the new o-ring goes in the correct groove on the filter housing. If you are not sure, google it. Make sure you put some oil on the o-ring and the threads before you reinstall. I have used the Mobil filter before on another Toyota and it worked fine.

Did what the pictures said and the O-ring kept getting pushed over and down the filter.

I’m not crazy about 3rd gen oil changes, my 2nd gen only took me 10 minutes with a Fumoto valve and the easy filter access.

That said, I did like you and used an after market cartridge and had the same problem with the large O-ring. I ended up torquing the hell out of it to keep it from leaking which made me nervous, was worried that I’d struggle getting it off the next time I needed to. Long story short, I just changed the oil and used the OEM filter this time and everything worked out.

Since you live so far from a dealer do yourself a favor and order some OEM filters on Amazon for peace of mind...good luck.
