I never noticed the sound with my 33" KM3's but the stock tires are either noisy on decel or the mud tires were loud enough to cover up the gear howl. I also went to 4.88 gears

When I added a bed mat to my truck the howl quieted a bit in the 50-53 mph range. I now only find it annoying from 54 to 58 mph.

You can definitely tell it's a harmonic/resonance issue by the sensitivity of the noise to changes in weight, etc.

Well holy crap in a bucket. :bucket:Took my bedmat out eons ago for various reasons.... put it back in and viola! Much quieter! (just masking the noise now, not fixing the lash/pinion angle thats causing it) :anonymous:

The only real fix for this issue is big mud tires, and loud exhaust. That will make you forget about that little howl noise.:mudding:

I have yet to hear good sounding exhaust on one of these. Tires aren’t out of the question

Finally got my truck wrote up at work for the rear diff howl. Tech Started a TAS case and they asked for fluid to be checked and pictures sent in if there was metal in the fluid and there was so the truck is getting a new rear diff assembly. My truck is a 2019 with now 8k miles. I drove my father in laws truck which is a 2018 with maybe 12k miles or so while it does have a bit of a howl its almost not noticeable and really hard to find but its there but if mine was as quite as his I would never complain mine is approx 3 times louder than his and is audible for a wider range than his.

I think what everyone who has problems needs to do is get the exhaust they put on the PRO. That rumble and growl and noise combined with a good country song solves the problem every time.

My 2020 Off-Road 6MT has the whine around 48-55 mph, so they still haven't fixed it. I noticed it the 2nd time I ever drove the truck.

My 2020 Tacoma has a noise that reminds me of the faint sound of someone rubbing their finger over the too of a wine glass. Its very faint but with the rear window open it is louder. Just took it to dealer today and they tell me their 2 “best techs” can’t hear it! Anyone get the NHTSA involved with this yet? I did a search on the website and didn’t see any instances of this problem on there. Recommend anyone that took to dealer and got zero satisfaction get another mechanics opinion, then file a report to get Toyotas attention!

I traded my 16 MT Access Cab in a little under a month ago. It was starting to whine. Very annoying.

I now have a 2020 PRO and it has such a loud nasty sounding exhaust and I combine that with country music, real LOUD.

I don't know if my new truck has the whine. Probably will never know.

Others suggest changing out the leafs to find relief. It's more of a harmonic thing that a real problem that could compromise your safety.

My 2020 TRD OR is dead silent between 45-65 in the rear on the highway compared to the 2016. I actually drove about 45 min at 55 mph with the stereo turned off just to make sure I wasn't imagining it. It sounds better sealed overall compared to the 2016.

So do 2019 and up trucks have the previous TSB already done to it already from the factory? I have a 2019 and it definitely howls at 55 on the dot. I'm okay with the conclusion that it is harmonics. But is it even worth bringing up to the dealer? I don't feel like getting the runaround, but I might as well so if anything goes wrong in the future I'm covered. As for home solutions, some people mentioned bed mat? I was gonna get a bedmat anyway I figure it's the cheapest thing to try... Also, my buddy has a 2018 and he claims he has NEVER heard the noise, but he did a Icon Stage 4 lift with a new leaf 5K miles into owning the truck, also on 33's
