Wood Heat Thread ~ post pics

Had a light to moderate drizzle the entire day on the range with temps dropping into the low 40's. Very handy to come home to a warm fire and set all my gear out to dry.

 

Got the last of my wood. I think I’m set for the winter. Probably just shy of two chords of oak.

 

Oh joy. Our oil heater seems to be breathing its last. I was hoping to get one more season out of it but now I'm not so sure. Wood stove only on Saturday morning, now it looks like wood stove only overnight and into Monday. Good thing we have it, and a metric buttload of fuel for it.

 

2 cords is enough? I've burned a cord already..

 

Should be. Weather is fairly mild here in the foothills of the Sierras. We’ll get into the teens sometimes and see snow every once in awhile but it’s not uncommon to have a sunny day get into the 50s F or more.

My kids have been wearing shorts right up until recently.

We are finally getting our first bit of winter weather.

 

Does anyone have any recommendations for an electric chainsaw sharpener? My dad mentioned that he was thinking of getting one while we were wandering around Tractor Supply, so I thought it would make a good Christmas gift for him.

 

Sorry, I'm an analog sharpener, so I can't recommend an electric model.

Electric sharpeners always seemed like more trouble than they were worth, since you have to take the chain completely off of the saw to sharpen it. Maybe get him a nice clamp-on manual unit instead? There's some nice ones out there that really let you get an evenly sharp clean-cutting saw without obsessively measuring raker height and tooth angles (because they do it for you).

 

I like the Pferd, Stihl hand sharpener. Quick, easy, portable, does a good job. Be sure you get one with the right round file size for the intended saw chain, they are different, and you can't change the file size, since they have to fit tight. File size is listed on a Stihl chain box. It also has a flat file, and sets the raker height at the same time.
I made a jig on top of the toolbox I carry with my MS 250 that holds the saw tight, for easy tailgate sharpening, touch ups, and it's at the right working height. A stump vise is a good alternative, but the stumps I leave are usually too low.

I have an attachment for my Dremel. It works great, and I do not have to remove the chain from the saw.

 

I've never been impressed with sharpening with anything other than my file. Most of my friends feel the same way.

 

A neighbor is a small engine guy. He uses an electric sharpener, cuz he does a lots of them. He says once he uses the electric, he cannot use another method. I do not know why, but he has never been wrong about anything so far.

 

If it's a grinding wheel style, it cuts a square gullet in the cutting tooth, which while you could probably get it back out with a file it would take forever and eat half the tooth. My biggest problem with an electric sharpener is being in the field and wanting to touch up your chains. It's not unheard of for me and a couple of guys to buck a few cords at once.

 

The one that they had at TSC looked like a dremel, but it was 12v though.

Do you know what he uses?

 

I use my Dremel in the garage, usually when I clean the saw. I use a file in the field.

Yeah.. I'm not spending that much on a saw sharpener. I can buy a 12 pack of files for like $15.

Stihl or Pfred (the makers of the Stihl) 2 in 1 sharpener. After 30+ years of file sharpening it's my only wayt to go now. Fast, accurate, easy to use.
