Check engine and trac off light on

On Friday morning when I started my truck up I immediately got a check engine and trac off light. On the way to work I didn't notice any abnormalities while driving. However, the check engine light was on constantly and the trac off light was on and off intermittently. It seemed to mostly turn on while coming to stops for some reason. That night I had autozone scan the obd2 and it came back with a gas cap error code. The employee told me my gas cap was probably just loose. Easy enough, I thought. So I retightened my gas cap (didn't feel loose), disconnected my battery to clear the computer, and drove on my happy way with no more lights. For the rest of the night and all of Saturday I thought my problem was solved as I had no more warning lights. However today when I started up the truck I'm back to square one with the same warning lights as I had on day one. Is it possible that my gas cap (2017) already went bad or do y'all think the issue might be bigger? Or is it possible that the issue was just a loose gas cap and I need to have the code professionaly cleared so it won't come back?

I have a new gas cap on the way in the mail and if that doesn't fix the problem I guess I'll just have to deal with the stealership and have them take a look. Luckily the truck is still under warranty.

 

How is the seal on the gas cap? Is the threaded part of the cap cracked due to over tightening? Maybe a leak in the gas fill neck? Im guessing you got a p04** code for evap. Check to make sure the vacuum lines in the engine compartment are good. Also check to make sure the air filter is closed and and the boot is not torn. Do you see little footprints in the engine compartment? If so you got rats/mice and they like to chew on insulation and rubber hoses.

 

Seal on gas cap looked good. Air filter is closed. Took a quick look in the engine compartment and didnt see anything obvious. Definitely didn't see little footprints anywhere. When I get a chance tomorrow I'll take a closer look and check for any loose lines. There was a spec of dirt on the seal of the gas cap that I brushed off. I don't know if that would be enough to throw a code but it didn't make the code go away. Either thats not the problem or I need to drive further to get the error to clear.

 

I’m not expert but any mice in your engine bay? A lot of posts lately about rats and mice chewing wires throwing all sorts of shit off.

 

Like I said I took a quick look at the engine and didn't see anything blatantly obvious. I actually did look pretty closely at the wires as I am aware of the mice/rat problem that some people have. What I didn't look closely at and what Tacomike18 suggested was checking the vacuum lines. I'll look at those tomorrow.
