I recently put a Bakflip G2 on my 2019 Access Cab, and it’s leaking, a lot.

I previously owned a 2010 Access Cab that also had a Bakflip G2 (installed by the dealer before delivery). The bed stayed bone dry under the G2 on the 2010.

On this new Taco, I had left a pair of gloves in the bed, near the tailgate. I grabbed them, planning to wear them and they were absolutely soaked. I have not installed the drain tubes yet because I didn’t have a big enough drill bit, but I can’t imagine no drain tubes causing that much water back by the tail gate.

I installed this Bakflip myself, and installed the seals at the front bed corners. I did not use the roll of weatherstripping, I watched the video that said it wasn’t needed on a 3rd gen so I didn’t use it. The Bakflip shuts correctly and I think it’s installed correctly, but it shouldn’t leak like a sieve.

Any ideas on what I did wrong?

I have the MX4. I do get some leaking from the side rails because the top edge of the box side is not perfectly flat. There are ridges from a molded pattern. The water isn't too bad on mine so I don't worry about it.

If you want more of a water seal, you could remove the side rails and apply a caulking or silicone to the corners and reinstall the side rails to fill the ridges.

It is most likely because the drain tubes are not installed. Any water that gets on the entire Bakflip surface will end up going into the side tracks and if the drain holes are not there to drain that water out, it will end up in your bed. You could test it out by placing the drain tubes in a bucket and see how much water it collects.

Don’t have the Bakflip but for my RetraxOne cover I just got a week ago I saw a small amount of water infiltrated near the tailgate as well. Waited til dark and turned on the cargo bedlights and could see a thin glow between the tailgate and the body/ tail light areas on both sides.

If you don’t have it, i’d recommend the bed mat. If any water comes in from any edge of the cover, the mat allows water to flow underneath it in the bed channels.

Thanks, I need to get off my butt and get a step drill bit and get the drain tubes installed. I do have a bed mat, and will try running the drain tubes into a bucket. I will also be Putting a light in the bed and looking for any light leakage.

    thanks again

I just finished installing the MX4 and can see multiple areas where water/debris wil be an issue. It doesn't seat fully at the cab and I can see light passing through. The angle brackets at the tailgate are overhanging a bit too far and have no end caps. Im definitely going to grind them off and apply some silicone.

They also started putting elastics around the prop rods in the packing. It totally distorts the side rail seals and I doubt they'll ever lay down flat. Also had to tear off the side seals and reseat them straight - they were all over the place.

I must have bought the one they made after the Christmas party.

Otherwise, it's a great cover and I'm glad to have a place to store my tools.

This one definitely isn’t as dry inside as the one I had on my second gen. I didn’t install that one, so I can’t compare that, but the seal on the tailgate is different. The old one had the same type seal as the bed rails.

im still glad to have it, I’ll just need to adjust. I’m going to get a couple of the biggest plastic tubs that will fit under it, and use them for things that don’t need to get wet.

    None.
I put a small bead of black silicone sealant under the rubber strip on the tonneau rail. Still annoyingly leaked at the sides. Took the rails off again, it’s nice as they come off as one piece, and ran a heavy bead of silicone along the inside of the aluminum rail. No leaks so far..

I modified my drain tubes to conduit connectors, 1/4" wide by 1/8" thickness stripping under the side rails, adhesive foam sheets for between the front rail and bed, ESI Tailgate Seal and going to RTV under the seals where the cover folds. That should minimize the leakage.

I did the 1/4" wide by 1/8" on the sides. Did 2 rows on the front of the cover.
Was going to just wedge foam in there, but wanted to use the higher quality dense foam.
Got a sheet from Hobby Lobby for $1.77. I think it was 12" x 18". There were 2 thickness. Got the thicker one. Then got the double sided sticky tape. It was $2.22 or something.
I cut out squares and put them on top of the squares that Bakflip included. Then I closed up the other opening on the end of the rails with a L shaped piece. This made it look clean and didn't look bad. The foam matches the Bakflip foam they sent out. All of it was the same type.
Going to RTV under the folding seals on top and where the border aluminum meets the panels.
