    Hello.

I recently got a hold of the oem aluminum running boards with hardware included. Per the instruction install sheet, I torqued the screw that holds the running board to the truck to 17 lbs...and then the bolt snapped. Don’t know what happened. Maybe the torque wrench is off? I ended torquing the rest to 13lbs. Can ya’ll chime in a helpful way and give opinion on whether the screw in pic is designed to withstand that torque or did I misread the instruction?

Is the bolt head M6? The torqueing spec is 7 ft-lbs.

Is the bolt head M8? The torqueing spec is 17 ft-lbs.

If you're sure the correct bolt head and torque specs were performed, then possibly the torque wrench might not be calibrated correctly?

Did you use the torque wrench to tighten down the bolt (as if it were a ratcheting wrench) which is not advisable since you could have passed the "click" easily and over torqued it too.

It’s the M8 bolt since it’s the one that goes to the cab of the truck.

I torqued my bolts to “about like so” and haven’t had any issues.

Yea, didn't even bother with a torque wrench. Tightened until it wouldn't turn with small reasonable force.

Fellow Taco owners. In case some don't get the joke.

German Language: Guten Tag means Good day

But in mechanic's world. Saying Guten Tag sounds like "Good & tight".

I torqued mine to the specs with a beam torque.
Sounds like you might have picked up a used model. Possibility it was over torqued before? Or just a defective bolt?

I just installed these running board in my 2020 Tacoma, I love them, they are a great bumper against door dents from neighbor cars

Would you happen to have picture of bolt that holds running board to the truck?

    Sorry I don't.
I see you have the instructions about the tightening sequence.
The sheared off bolt you pictured, does it have a zinc finish? The factory bolt would be black finish.
If it was a replacement bolt, it might be of a lesser strength.

Hello. Bolt is black (has 10.9 B.Y. written on top) so I am surprised it broke. I am starting to suspect the very old torque wrench is to blamed.

I had this happen on my brothers truck. There was rust in the threads in the bottom of the cab. Cleaned it out and everything was fine
