Don't have personal experience with the Hilux, but in general cars made for foreign markets are shit.

The only thing I can sort of appreciate is that there is beauty in simplicity.

They are available with the diesel engine in Japan? i for some reason thought Japan had tougher emission control laws than the US??

Diesels Hilux are sold in japan, stricter emissions don’t necessarily mean no diesel.

Here in Mexico we have both options. I owned a Hilux 2007 , definitely utilitarian, it is a works partner, suport a Tons of load, nothing fancy at all. Small stereo, not stable, but it is literally unbreakable. after that I sold and buy a tacoma 2011, and I´m back with the 2019.

If emissions control is not an issue for those engines, why they not sold here in the US?

I have a 1988 diesel Hilux imported to the states from Japan. It has the same non-turbo engine and drivetrain that was featured on a Hilux of the same year that Top Gear tried to destroy awhile back.

It has a 73 hp and 113 lbs of tq. It is excellent off road. The motor feels like a tractor motor. Highway driving is a different story as it can a achieve 70 mph, but is slow getting there and works hard as it maintains it.

I chalk maintenance up to it being a 31 year old vehicle. It sat most of its life in Japan and had 55,000 miles when I purchased it 3 years ago.

As a vehicle that that wasn't driven all it's life to nearly driving it daily, I've replaced several things along the way. They include alternator, Voltage Regulator, glow plugs, glow plug timer, temp sensor, slave cylinder, and master cylinder. The diesel injection pump currently has a leak which I suspect was caused by old dry-rotted gaskets over the time it sat. That will be the most expensive fix that I will currently undertake. Most parts that I have used came from Japan, Australia, and the U.K. Some parts were shared with the U.S. spec Toyota pick-up of that generation which included the voltage regulator, slave cylinder, and master cylinder.

Overall, I love the vehicle. I enjoy learning about it and getting intimate it. I love how it's trapped in time. It's survived 3 decades and my kids love it. I've received many compliments too.

I really don’t feel that the skyline is over-hyped . A few pounds overweight but not blown out of proportion. For the time it was groundbreaking. It just has been marginalized by the current awd turbocharged field .

Audi's made in the 2000s for Brazil are shit.
South Carolina made Z3s for Western Europe are shit.
Anything made in or for Eastern Europe are double dog shit.
    Toyota compacts made for Panama.

    I can go on.

I have been told that it is the cost of gas that makes buyers lean towards more efficient cars.

My experience on the models mentioned is not based on new features, but cut corners, rusting, finish, and just good old fashioned manufacturer cheapness.

I have issues with the “TRD Off Road” badge on my truck, as it certainly was not developed for off road racing, however.........thank got my truck doesn’t say “Invincible X” on it. The heat gun, dental floss, and goof-off would be coming out right away.

Ridgeline is superior, just ask Caroline in accounting, she's crunched the numbers and its a winner. She's not trying to fool anyone with that off road lifestyle bit. She's the woman you see at the gym recording every rep on those baby weights because dog mom bod. It's the Netflix and Cheese-Its that has led her there. Just don't catch her on a Friday night at your local Applebee's at 11PM because it's on that night she wears them tight fittin jeans, sassy panties and attitude. As the night drags on and no one is falling for buying her drinks that she'll talk your ear off about how superior the Ridgeline really is and how the Tacoma's rear drums lead to longer stopping distances. It seems that everyone loves Caroline, but she's an alpha widow from back in 1998. She's hope to find love again, but fuckboys driving VooDoo blue Tacomas need not apply

I used to drive a Hilux in the Philippines. They're great because of how nimble they are, easy to get around. Is it necessarily better than the Tacoma? Nope. Would I drive one in the US? Also, Nope.

Except the Fords that were rebadged.

I mean I get it, how are you going to sell a Ford in Asia. I think it was the 2010 era when Ford shipped an Escape with Land Rover badges for their challenged markets.
