Im a new owner of a 2012 Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4.

From what i can see my dealership changed only the p/s fluid and brake fluid. Although I work there as a main line tech, I feel much more comfortable taking it to my local toyo dealer as I work at a Chevrolet.

As far as i know, the trans fluid is original. 2012 with 60k miles. Just not sure if I should spend 300$ on a system flush or hold out until 100k.

Let me know what you would do!!

I will be servicing the front and rear diff myself at work as we carry the 75w90 gear oil.

Does the transfer case use regular ATF?
    Thanks!!

Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is a main line tech ?
Anyways if you don’t feel comfortable doing the work I’m sure you know someone in your shop who could handle it.

Transfer case uses 75-90 same as the diffs.

I‘v been doing an annual drain and fill on my auto transmission since 45k miles. Valvoline MaxLife ~$18 a gallon @Walmart

Main line techs are heavy line. We do everything! Whatever you come in for, we do it. Engine work, tearing transmissions and engines apart etc. we just don’t have the connectors to hook up to a toyota to do a full system flush. I just dont want to do a pan drop and only get 4 quarts out of a 12 quart system.

You didn't change it at 30K. That's what I would have done. Every drop. You asked.

I would use what your owners manual recommends in all holes. It's already laid out and gives you options. I used a 75W90 GL-4 gear oil in my transfer case.

    :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Imagine working for an American made brand that doesn't supply the connections to do FULL system flushes on Toyota's. I could literally drain and fill not even half of what the full transmission calls for because of this ( lazy and pointless)

Only asking because again, I don’t know the full specs and would rather hear from toyota owners rather than do it at work (because I cant)

    AGAIN.

We have no machine connections that link to a TOYOTA.

If you dont know, 90% of shops use a machine that flushes your ENTIRE transmission. They just hook it up, usually to the feed and output pipes, stand back and watch it do its thing for 10 mins and get paid 100$ +

I WANT TO DO A FULL SYSTEM FLUSH

    NOT A DRAIN AND FILL

And yes Chevys use ATF for their transfer cases!

Also for those that didn't read the OP, I just purchased the vehicle. No history of fluids changed other than brake and power steering fluid in 60k miles.

Do a search on TW. The OR’s have a pump that assists in a full transmission flush. I don’t remember the particulars I don’t have a OR.

Not surprising. T-5 manual transmissions for most makers used ATF. Worked fine.

Do a search on here in the upper right corner. Or use Google. There are a few DIY threads on each method but I cant find them right now.. But since you asked what WE do, most people on here would elect to do a drain and fill with each oil change

I think what you are thinking of is using the lines to/from the trans cooler (on trucks w/ tow package) to do a full flush as the engine is running and the ATF is being circulated. Always sounded a bit sketchy to me trying to keep enough fluid in the truck while its running. Either that or you are thinking of the electronic brake booster in the ORs that makes it wicked easy to bleed brakes haha
