Take everthing off. Intake manifold and spark plugs

Use a magnetic pan to hold all your bolts. I found it to be more organized by doing one side at a time.

Make sure all the bolts you take out go back in. I almost forgot to put the chain tensioner bolt back on the driver dide. Probably had 1 too many beers at that point lol

And as everyone else has said that cam bolt is a PITA to take off. Be careful and make sure you hold the camshaft with another wrench. Luckily I had the help of a friend to get it done. Still i had to use a jack handle for more leverage. Break it loose before you try to set the crank.

Lastly and most importantly mark the link above the keyway on the gear. White-out works great. Set the crank to 0 and dont worry about the yellow marks on the chain. Just mark whichever one is above the keyway af that time. Then swap it and put the new gear in the same spot

    Good luck

In addition to all the other stuff posted and written up, take some time to clean. There's a dozen different ways for dirt and gunk to fall in to the open valve train, especially the driver side with the big wiring harness crossing over the head. I removed the engine cover, and cleaned what I could using compressed air and plastic detailer, but ended up taking time to remove dirt at each step and especially before I pulled the valve covers. The whole point is to do this so our trucks run BETTER. Introducing dust where it shouldn't be is not the fast track to HP.

Will these cam gears reduce or eliminate knock/ping? I've had the TSB done and still have to use premium to prevent ping.

Not sure on that one. Maybe @JustDSM or @Torspd could give us some insight?

I have the same issue with knock/valve clatter. I run premium fuel and it solves the issue.

I'm still selling these. Holidays make for slower shipping to and from me though. I'm shooting for less than a week to get gears in your hands for anyone interested.

What rpms are you guys getting pinging, valve clatter? I've had what feels like slight misfire under load under 1500rpms or so. It's barely noticeable on premium but gets worse with regular. I think the gears helped some with this issue as well. Definitely smoothed out the overall rpm range.

Wohoo, screw you cam bolts. All done, pretty easy job with a cheater pipe. Thanks for the research, work and effort @mightytacoman as well as follow up help along the way. Top notch.

For me it is roughly between 2600-4000 rpm under a good amount of load, guessing 75-100% throttle. When it happens i let off right away. A couple times I stayed in it to see what happens, it lasts a second or two then stops-I assume the ECM pulls timing. But like I said it almost never happens on premium now. I'm probably going to do these cam gears anyways.

Valve clatter and pinging are not related. ECU does nothing to account for valve clatter. I get it under same conditions. I had it on multiple Toyota engines before. Do a bit of searching on the forum and there are several posts on valve clatter. I have accepted it as design characteristic. However, pinging/pre-detonation is not related to clatter and not monitored by the ECUs.

I don't think it is valve clatter, but can't really say exactly what it is. I have had the TSB re-flash which seemed to help slightly. Premium does help. That makes me think it is ping, but I'm not an expert. Isn't knock the same as ping, and the engine has knock sensors?
