Manager of a body shop here, my last shop was Lexus/Toyota certified.

Your paint is normal, it has not been painted before.

Flares and bumpers on Tacoma’s are textured under the paint. Hence the orange peel look.

Fun fact, if they get scratched in an accident. Proper procedure would be to replace and repaint them. It’s not possible to recreate the texture, you’ll have one part that’s shiny and the rest is textured.

No bumper comes painted, of any manufactured.(actually old Volvo bumpers do) It’s due to how bumpers are shipped, the probability of damage to the paint is high.

Also every car has a slightly different colour, a good shop will use your paint code along with spray cards or a camera to get the colour that’s on your car. A cheap shop will just punch your paint code in the system and use that.

Lots of factors when painting a car, even with the exact same paint. Material, weather, temperature, gun pressure.

The orange peel/texture looks normal but the paint matching looks off on your truck. My 2016 BBP doesn't have a transition that drastic, not saying that others don't though. I'd be a little pissed if I had a difference that drastic on a new vehicle.

Bad photo as example but only one I had on hand with sunlight on it:

Stop with the orange peel already, in that pic the body panel has it too. There isn’t Toyota on the lot doesn’t have orange peel.

When my Tacoma was in the body shop getting a bump to the back bumper repaired I asked the shop for a quote to repair a scratch in my front bumper when I hooked a jean rivet on it walking past the truck (%*()%*)(%). This is the exact response I got. The only way to deal with the bumper was to sand the whole bumper flat and then reshoot it, but that would cost a whole lot more $$$ than a simple scuff and spray.

I've also noticed my particular truck doesn't match other silver trucks and I've owned mine since it came off the transporter. I had purchased a used color matched cap, and it didn't match my truck 100%, but I have a photo of my truck with another silver truck in the background it likely would have matched 100%.

I would keep that shop if I was you. A lot of shops don’t know these procedures and treat them like conventional repairs. I’ve worked at bmw, Tesla, Lamborghini, Audi certified shops, now I do Nissan Infiniti and Mazda so I know those cars best.

Metallica and pearls are the hardest to work with, the spacing or density of metallics make the world of difference in shading of a colour.

This is correct. I work for a Coatings Manufacturer and supported a number of major OEM's. Bumpers are not painted with the vehicle. There are many factors that affect the look of color. This gets compounded when the two panels are butted together. A slight difference in angle will make a huge difference in appearance. As previously stated, texture under the film gets magnified by the clear resulting in a perceived loss in DOI (Depth of Image).

Op and any others interested, try this when the vehicle is clean.

Shine a flashlight on it at night at several different angles and it looks even worse, its the difference in paint on metal and paint on a rubber bumper or any rubber part on a vehicle.

That's good to know! I have a Jeep hardtop that could use repainting. It has a texture, so I assume I'd lose that texture look to get it repainted? I like the texture as I think it hides light trail scratches.

My father-in-law use to own a body shop. I watched him several times work to match original paint on old cars (he did a lot of restorations). It gave me appreciation for painting.

I guess that's one of the beauties of black - it would be hard to be mismatched. lol

You know that can be solved with a brand new black high clearance bumper with a nice winch. All joking aside, I’d be pretty annoyed too OP. Still a nice looking taco.

Yeah, I still like my truck, it doesn't really bug me looks wise as much as the thought that something might have happened that I was not made aware of when I bought the truck. But whatever, what's done is done, I'll just enjoy it for what it is and try not to miss something like that next time.

I know its an old thread, but I googled why my bumper on my 2023 Taco looked different and it brought me here. Good to know it is normal. The color seems to match fine on mine, its just the texture that is different.

^According to the guide at Honda and Toyota plant tours, it's an ongoing challenge to get the paint color on plastic and metal parts to match. Plastic parts are painted off-site and brought in to the final assembly line, whereas the body is painted after welding.

^Thread is from 2019. Since then, the OP sold his Tacoma and defected to a Ford F150.
