So it looks like the local mountains are getting dumped on right now. Looking to make a snow run tomorrow (friday) or Saturday.
Where are some good out of the way spots off near Palomar, Julian or out off the 8 to go check out the white stuff?

Not necessarily looking to do any hardcore snow wheeling or get myself in trouble, just want to play in the snow a bit, throw a couple of snowballs and let the dog derp around in it. Looking for some out of the way places because it being the first good storm of the winter and a holiday weekend I am sure it will be a mob scene.

    Anybody got any "secret" spots?

Have a fresh set of Duratracs, winch, recovery gear, shovel, chains etc...

My. Laguna via Sunrise highway is a decent bet if you're South and Big Bear up North for sure ( may require chains ).

All the roads leading in/out of Big Bear are currently closed.
Palomar Divide trail gate is closed.

    So those are out.

Palomar mountain requires chains. Read they are turning you around if you dont have them.

From what I gather Palomar (and just about every other area with snow) was at R-3 chain control meaning chains were mandatory, even on 4x4 vehicles.
Guess who has 3 sets of chains and none of them fit the tires on my new truck (have 2 sets for my other truck and one random set).

Did manage to find a set locally that fit and my Maxtrax showed up today too. Going to try to hit it up tomorrow.

Autozone had them in stock. Was looking for the same size as you.

ETA: I found a pretty helpful Caltrans link that shows current road closures, chain requirements and the like.

http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov On the options tag select chain requirements and closures.

I plan to go to mthigh tomorrow. the roads are less curvy than big bear. hopefully they open up the roads at 6am.

I went last year and i believe it was the north resort was still closed. so they had a huge parking lot packed with snow that i bust donuts in.

    Mission accomplished.

Went to Palomar mountain. Chains were required but they were letting 4x4s through just by showing that you had chains on board.
Glad they did because almost the entire way up was basically clear and dry. Felt kinda bad for people bumping their way up dry roads with chains on their cars. Saw one fender flare ripped off on one truck and a car with both fenders torn up from their chains.

Dog got to play in the snow for the first time (she wasn't thrilled), I got to drive around in a little bit of snow, a good time was had by all.

It's because most people in socal are idiots when it comes to chaining up and I guarantee those people put them on wrong.

    Looks beautiful!
