    The dealer has nothing to do with the design of the oil filtering system or anything else on the truck....

    There are actually a handful of manufactures running plastic oil pans (VW/audi comes to immediate mind). Lightweight and inexpensive to manufacture. They're all good until you bang it up against something, or strip the drain plug..

    I think it was for environmental reasons. The paper cartridge filters are easier to dispose of.

    If I decide to buy one of these Tacoma's I would do the Baxter Engineering spin on oil filter adapter. Not cheap but a permanent solution to ease oil changes.

    The bolt was getting rounded by me, the plastic air dam was in way enough the bolt was tight. Removed the dam and had no problems getting it off. An extension might have helped. I think laying on you back just makes everything harder.

    you got that right! my 2nd gen took 30 seconds to get oil filter off. takes 15 minutes just to get to the oil filter now and you really have to muscle off the canister.
