I need to update my post here, my 09 2.7 made it to 274k km and no further. It now consumes a liter of oil every 1.5 tanks of fuel or 900km. I'm currently prepping for the rebuild. Confirmed oil control ring failure. It's also plugged the cat with oil. This is one of the first failures of parts that I had not modified. It's also spitting out coolant from the overflow tank consistently.

Same thing happened to my 2.7L 2TR at 187k. I ended up rebuilding my engine since it was burning a qrt of oil every 700 miles like yours. My oil control rings were completely clogged with carbon and they weren't expanding in order to scrape oil off the cylinder walls. I've only put 2,000 miles on my rebuilt engine but so far its running really well.

Did you use OEM replacement pistons and rings or did you go aftermarket

I had my engine bored over and used OEM .50 oversize pistons and rings.

Blew the head gasket and cracked the head at 222K. New rebuilt head from YotaShop.com. Back on the road and just this weekend turned 230k.

My 2001 TRD OFFROAD 2.7L 5 speed has 338,000 miles on her. I drive it 80 miles round trip to work everyday with no issues, still has original clutch in it. I do not dog it but it is not babied either about 20 miles of my 80 mile round trip everyday is interstate so it does see 75-80 mile per hour speeds. Toyota's are pretty much bulletproof, do your regular maintenance and drive it. I have owned this truck since new and have always taken care of the maintenance on it.

MY 17 2.7 JUST HIT 35K. I bought the truck due to the long standing reputation this engine has for longevity. Runs perfect, burns no oil, change out with mobil 1 every 5k. Only concern is oil light flashes back on for a fraction of a second after the engine starts, then goes out, only after sitting over night. Is mine the only one that does this lol?

    Stock for now.. maybe
1995 2wd extended cab 4cl. Runs great with only regular maintenance. 250,000 miles. I'm not putting as many miles on it now because I got a 2015 tacoma a few months ago. it's not worth getting rid of it for the cash value. I would rather give it to a friend in need or keep it

Older thread that isn't used very much.. may as well keep it going

I have 202,000 on my 2007. No major issues. I've replaced the alternator, shocks, one U-joint, and the HVAC blower motor in the 12+ years I've owned it. Other than that just normal stuff like tires, brakes, battery, and fluid changes. I do have some paint peeling on the hood but it still runs as good as new.

Mine was my primary daily driver and our "nice" vehicle for the 1st 9 years. We reached the point where we needed a bigger truck and I bought a F150 crew cab 3 years ago. The Tacoma was too good to sell so we kept it too. I put 180,000 miles on it in 9 years. It's taken 3 years to get the other 22,000 miles so it may take a while to reach 300,000, but I have no doubts it will make it.

The only time my oil light comes on is for a few seconds the 1st startup after an oil change. I wouldn't think it would be an issue at startup after sitting for hours as long as it goes away in a few seconds.

328k. Original owner. Bought it 19 years ago (Dec. 2000). Would not hesitate to drive it to CA and back.

Besides regular maintenance stuff (fluids, brake pads, battery, valve cover gasket, plugs, tires, etc, etc) not much done to it:
    • clutch w/ master cylinder & slave cylinder
    • radiator (typical crack in plastic top)
    • ball joints (originals were fine, but done just in case before a long road trip)
    • ac compressor (bearing went out, but replaced whole compressor with one from a part out truck)
    • carrier bearing (2x)
    • OME lift

My 2017 2.7L does this from time to time. Never really gave it much thought, just rolled 50k miles a week or so ago.

Yeah, I'd rather change brake pads instead of engine braking for sure

I have a 1996 2.7 Tacoma, back in 2015 the head gasket blew so I parked it. It has 408,000 miles on it. It has the original clutch, rear brake shoes, radiator. The only parts I have replaced are the fuel pump and starter. This was my first Tacoma, it will be restored.

I'd love to see it when you get it done. Good to know people are getting a lot of miles on these engines. My 30K 2.7 should last my lifetime.
