How do you carry your propane tank?

Seems like a 20lb tank is overkill. Even an 11lb seems like a lot to me.

Depending on what you use it for, a couple of those 1lb bottles should easily last at least a couple weeks. You can fit those in your pocket, lol...

On my travel trailer, I had a slow leak on my regulator, and my 20 pounder still wasn't empty after a week of boondocking (maybe 1/4 full at the end) with lots of cooking and working the fridge. I have two bottles, and the only reason I used the 2nd bottle is because I was leaving camp for the whole day and wasn't sure if what I had left would keep the fridge going while I was gone.

Without a leak, a 20# bottle should get you 3-4 weeks including cooking, fridge, heater, etc...

 

The 1lb bottles are fine for the occasional camp/cook. I camp/cook quite frequently and they get expensive/annoying to keep up with. The 10/11lb bottle is perfect for general camp use, plus if you run out of propane at home you have a backup.

 

You can refill the small bottles, too. You just need an adapter, and can even fill it off a 20# bottle (never tried it myself, though).

I guess I'm kind of a weight weenie. My first gen doublecab doesn't exactly have a ton of space or cargo capacity, so space/weight is at a premium. If I can find a way to pair down the weight, I'll do it. Of course you need to judge for yourself how much gas you actually use, but if you get back from an extended trip and you're only 75% full, you carried a bunch or extra weight for no reason...

 

I'll give up some weight for some comforts. Hammocks give way for cooking gear! I've dealt with the refill adapter as well, just not worth it for me. At one point I had a dozen or so little green bottles around.

 

We each have our priorities, lol.

Just offering an alternative for others to consider.

But with that small a size, there's no need to "mount" them anywhere. You can just tuck them in with the rest of your camp stove, etc... Maybe wrap a towel around them to keep them from bouncing around.

 

I guess I do a 20 lb tank in a milk crate, but that's getting old save for the ease of exchanging the tanks. I use it for the stove, skottle, and a propane firepit (this is the primary consumer). I'd love to have something on a swing out. I agree the 20lb is overkill.

 

I see a lot of trucks with propane tank is mounted outside. What about overheating by sun? It's open for 100+ degree.

 

Same as sitting on a deck on a grill?

 

I don't know, never used. Just planning next steps for my overland rig.

Hey @Sandman614 , are you still using the Quick Fist ratcheting strap for the propane can? Would you say there is room to mount two straps next to each other for two tanks?
