I agree with you 100%- they don't want it to become a free for all, and I don't either. And if possible I pick up any trash that idiots leave behind. But generally, these are not the people that are hiking, it's the idiots that pull in at 2AM on the way home from work when they're passing thru. This happens more than you'd believe.

just get a nice ground tent. If that cap you have is secure and can hold all your gear, that's all you need. Save the money for gas/beers along the way.

In my experience, people that “hike” aren’t very conscious of their impact either. There’s a lot of people get out pretty infrequently and don’t really care to keep things nice for others. I.E. most people at national parks. A lot of times it’s ignorance more than intentional but the result is the same.

also the guy that pulls over into a National park to rest up or sleep in his/her vehicle and doesn't abuse the priviledge of it , pays their taxes along with others to maintain these places.

so do the people that trash it. And the people that want it to stay nice. Just cause you pay taxes doesn’t mean you get to abuse things. We have rules and people to enforce those rules because people can’t be trusted to regulate themselves appropriately. If we all behaved in an acceptable manner, things would be a lot better and we’d have a lot more freedom. The unruly minority ruin it for the rest. But as they say, laws are only for the law abiding.

I agree 100%, I travel 100s of miles for my job and a lot of times I must pull over somewhere to rest or sleep and sometimes its a park I shouldn't be profiled as an abuser just because im not a hiker or camper when I use common sense and not abuse the places.

Thought the same thing. I did my planning for a 24 day trip in a matter of a couple months, which over that time, spent probably 6 real hours thinking it through. It's easier than most people think. Just go.

Right on! I’m overthinking it for sure... but also having fun overthinking it if you know what I mean.
Solid advice though, just gotta go!

Got that taller cap for my road trip/camping build. I sold my old one for exactly how much I paid for this one, $375, picked her up in NJ, 3-4 hrs one way.
Had the cap painted at Maaco for $400, it’s a base coat/clear coat blend instead of clear over top of the base, but is the factory paint code.
Looks good like 95% match, the color is right just the gloss is a little more dull in certain lighting situations. Beats bed lining it myself having to rent a big compressor, build a paint booth, spend a day etc., for what would’ve been around $200. 4/5 stars highly recommend.ADBCDE15-A097-44BD-8E4D-FC3BF01F1846.jpg

Got it dirty the next day at my first TW meet/trail run.

Up next is a drawer build, hopefully using my existing platform as the top

This. Also as far as ground tents go, check out REI garage sales. Can get good tents for less half price that are practically new.

Yeah I like the ethos behind benevolent camping at trailheads etc. even if not allowed. I’m sure the enforcement/penalty would be flexible in most situations if you explained yourself, like that run I joined w they’re looking at doing a trash clean up run at the same site, it’ll help build positivity with parks employees or whomever.

Just had a thought after reading through past comments too I think I’m going to bring a ground tent with me not only for hiking excursions but mostly as a plan b for campgrounds because I have paid for an RV site and had people tell me I can’t vehicle camp and when I get there it turns out I could’ve at a tent site but oh well
