You don't have to remove anything exhaust related. Not at all. And when it says "remove the steering shaft" it doesn't need to come out. It just needs to be disconnected. Think of the shaft like two rods joined together by a clamp. You loosen the clamp and move one out of the way so you can pull the starter past them. Really simple. I'd just recommend marking them before you take them apart!

Thank you! My starter is working again and I know I have to plan to buy new or replace those pesky contacts as mine are pretty much worn out.

Sub’d for potential near future resolution to a problem. Well done.

Did you guys remove the wheel for this? FSM doesnt mention it but some members appear to have it off.

I'd recommend taking the wheel off. It really helps with access. I think the FSM doesn't mention it because they probably have the truck on a lift.

I took a look at this today. I can see why the FSM says to remove the exhaust, that gives you a LOT more room. But my exhaust bolts are rusted pretty bad and removing them/potentially breaking the studs would be a big job in itself.

Getting the intermediate steering shaft completely out of the way (rather than just giving it some wiggle) would help too.

Makes sense. I havent done mine yet but will pull it if it fails or I hit 200000. Whichever comes first.

Until then I bought a rebuilt kit here and keep it in my glovebox.

I noticed my Kubota has a Denso starter with this type of solenoid also

Also dont forget that you can get one or two extra starts out of it if you are stranded away from a garage. Just give it a few taps with your factory bottle jack handle or tire release tool while someone turns the key. Worked a few times on my Model A as well.

Thanks for this write up, completed this job last week. Went pretty smoothly. Definitely need a 6 point socket for the bolts connecting starter to engine. My original cheap 12 point socket was trying to strip it. I also followed the below videos advice and separated starter and solenoid to slide out a little easier. A local alternator shop had the contacts and plunger and charged me $30. Was a relief because I really didn't want to wait for something to ship from the interwebs, truck is my DD.

    Good luck future fixers.
