I have a 05 tacoma 4.0 without the hood with hood scoop. Ive heard that you need the hood scoop in order to clear the supercharger that Toyota used to offer from the factory. is this true or can I run the hood I have??

no need. the hood scoop offers no extra clearance inside the engine bay.

What will a supercharger do to that weak head gasket? :crapstorm:

190k on my '05. 75k of that has been with boost and a smaller pulley. Very much a story of YMMV

Planning on possibly changing the heads to the newer ones and at the same time changing the head gasket to somthing better.

The best head gasket is the updated Toyota head gasket.

As for the charger, you probably know that when you add boost to any application, you'll be stressing the head gaskets anyway. Knowing that, you can rule out "if" and set some time and money aside for "when" and just have fun with it. Whether you do that now or later is up to you. Swapping a head gasket (or two) is a ton of work, but if you can turn a wrench, it isn't the end of the world some make it out to be. If you do it later, just monitor engine temps, fluid levels and shut it down ASAP if anything is amiss.

I wasn't aware the heads themselves changed, I thought only the head gasket changed.

If I have my information correct, in 2009 they put vvti on the exhaust and intake side of the camshafts as opposed to just the intake. which should make more power and possably better fuel efficiency.

No you don’t need a hood scoop....but it does add 25hp to all trucks that have it.
