I got the dreaded blinking when I tried to shift into 4hi the other day. Symptoms were, would not engage in 4 hi or 4 lo, light blinking and once I put the selector back into 2 hi it would continue to blink until the ignition was shut off. No noises of any kind, just no 4wd engagement. My truck is a TRD OR 2013 w/ 50K miles. I have the extended warranty, so I took it in to the dealership. Spent some hours looking at 4runners and tacomas while they diagnosed it. They said it was covered, and I brought it in once the part arrived and they made the swap. I have a buddy who is a tech there, and asked if I could keep the old one, and he said as long as it's an extended warranty repair, they should be able to give me the part (which they did) but that under the factory warranty, they have to keep them and maybe even return them to toyota. So, when I get a chance I will take the old one apart and see about soldering the connections etc to keep is as a spare/back up. With the trips my wife and I take, alone, pulling our scout trailer into forest roads and trails, 1000 plus miles from home with almost always no cell service, it's not too comforting knowing it just might not work again some day. I know anything can fail, but when it has a history of going out like this does, with no warning, that isn't cool. Hopefully, the back up will work and be an option if needed.

I'd wait till after you buy the truck and take the one on the truck apart. Expensive part to buy if you don't need to

Ya for sure, new to tacomas so was just researching the worst case scenario of full replacement to get a ballpark for pricing. Thoughts on the price? truck has frame replaced in 2012, timing belt and water pump, suspension done in last 20k km. however needs abs sensors and o2 sensors and the rear diff lock sorted.

Hey all. Been having an on and off problem with my 4x4 on an 06. Took it for a dip in some water, got stuck, stayed stuck for about 1.5hrs. Truck stayed stuck in 4hi for a few hours but eventually went back to 2hi amd 4lo if asked.

Fast forward three weeks and i tried putting it in 4hi. Stayed stuck in 4hi and wouldnt go back to 2hi. I reset and it seemed to reluctantly go back to 2hi. Now it will happily go to 4hi, but 4lo gets it very angry w/ blinking lights. Havent tore my actuator apart yet but if it was fu**ed i imagine it wouldnt go into 4x4 at all. But this only seems to be a problem for 4lo. I can survive without it but id like to fix it. Just seems odd that 4hi is fine but 4lo isnt
