You already have some rust so wrapping and derping are not options without full rust removal. Since you would have to go that far you might as well paint.

With it being your first truck, I would paint the whole thing and keep it. I wish that I would have listened to people that told me, one day your going to wish that you kept your first truck. Also being a Taco, its going to last you a long time.

I agree, that’s one of the reasons I didn’t trade in when I purchased my ‘19. It’s been an excellent vehicle as it’s still my daily driver. I’m just not sure if it’s worth spending the money to repaint everything or to just touch up the areas that do currently.

Here’s my opinion. If you have the time and ability to remove the bumpers, door handles, flares, tailgate plastic, mirrors, etc., yourself and can be without your truck for 2 weeks, and get your buddy to prep and spray it, paint the whole truck. If no to any of those, get your buddy to just paint the bad areas.

The clearcoat on the roof of my 06 failed, leading to the paint underneath failing, leading to the whole roof to develop surface rust.
I was quoted anywhere from $1500-2000 to repaint just the roof. At 196k I wasn’t about to do that.
I stripped it down to bare metal with a sander and stripping wheel(total PIA), prepped the surface, PREPPED the surface, then did some more prep.
I purchased 2 cans Spraymax rattle can epoxy primer. Primed. Sprayed 2 cans color matched rattle can paint over the epoxy primer. Then applied 2 cans spraymax 2K clear-coat.

For a first time paint job with rattle cans, it came out very nice. That was two years ago and it still looks great. I highly recommend the Spraymax brand paint for this route as it’s a 2K in a can.

Takes some time to accomplish, and it had its moments where I was like WTF am I doing, but for $200 in supplies I’m pleased with how it looks, and no more rusty roof comments.

To add, the hood would be harder to make look perfect. I would start on the roof first

As much as I would like to tackle this task right now, I just don’t have the time. I have a body shop guy who’s quoted me around $4-5k to completely repaint the truck. His work is great as he’s painted my grille and fender flares before. I know the rust is the big issue at hand, so I’m just trying to see what’s the best route considering the truck has quite a bit of miles.

Instead of painting the whole truck, maybe a two tone like a silver top/black bottom? I'm assuming your truck is black.

Went to a body shop for the same thing today in SoCal and the body shop that Toyota recommended quoted me $1400 to repaint the roof panel. I was curious what it would cost to just get a replacement panel ($842) and then have the body shop put it on. Waiting on a quote for the labor on that...any thoughts on if replacing the whole panel is overkill? Mine is 10+ years of sitting in AZ, NV, and CA sun with poor paint care by the previous owner. He suggested wrapping it for $300 or so but then I just have to deal with it in a few years when it'll prolly be worse under the wrap.

Replacing the roof? Are you nuts? That's $842 plus hours and hours of labor, removing the glass, removing the headliner, drilling spot welds and welding the new one on, and then $1400 to paint it, and then reinstall the glass and headliner.
