    Me too. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. If it is safe to drive over about 30-35 mph 4X4 isn't necessary and in fact could be detrimental.

    The other guys have explained the situation, but think of this visual. When you go around a corner all 4 wheels take a different path and will have to turn at different speeds. When in 2wd the rear diff only sends power to one wheel when one gets in a bind and that allows the other wheel to coast. Both front wheels are coasting. But when you go to 4X4 everything is locked together and all 4 wheels are being forced to turn at the same speed. Since the inside wheels, especially the front inside wheel have far less distance to travel compared to the outside rear wheel. And since they are now turning at the same speed, the inside wheels need to be able to spin some. If on slick surfaces that doesn't hurt anything. But if traction is good you will bind up or break something.

    Pulling a boat out of a slick ramp is a good time to use 4X4. Just switch it off before you get onto dry pavement and have to turn the wheels.

    AWD is a different system. It uses technology to send power to all 4 wheels yet allows them to turn at different speeds. It can be used on any surface and in fact is better in light snow and ice. True 4X4 is much better in harsher off road conditions or deep snow.
