Anyone that has executed the fix themselves care to post some details? Where, exactly, did you strike with the hammer, how hard, in what direction, how many times? I also see a couple of folks used vice grips to bend it back; please elaborate on that as well, if possible. Thanks!

This happened to my fuel door as well. Work perfectly forever, went to pump gas and couldn't believe it.

The door is not the strongest design. Be that as it may, the creaking and squeaking that accompanied opening and closing it BEFORE the hinge finally bent was a clue. 2 minutes and 2 cents of lithium grease on the hinge would have mitigated the issue

I just had this same thing happen last night in my 2018 OR. I fueled and closed the door only to realized it bent. It took very little effort to close for the amount of distortion. 10min and a lot of effort with vice grips I bent the assembly back far enough to close with reasonable aesthetics. Needless to say, for a truck less than 2 years old I am not impressed. I oiled the hinge with 3m oil.

Lubing the hinge should really be done twice a year and i'm not talking about crappy WD40 either.

While I agree this will become part of ownership like washing and waxing, this is an engineering error in design. I have never owned a vehicle that required maintenance of the fuel door hinge to prevent damage. My truck also just came out of it's 25k Toyota care service. If lubing was required, it should have been done on any of the Toyota care services I have had. I guess some of us have to learn the hard way.

You “oiled” after it bent or before?

3m oil? Sounds like 3n1 oil but if so I wouldn’t think that’s sufficient for any length of time. I would think some kind of grease that’s thicker than 3n1 oil (if that’s what it was. I probably should lube mine up as preventative

3m all purpose lubricant I had in the garage. Oiled after I bent the hinge back the best I could. Anything beats the dry hinge and now that I am aware I will keep a closer eye on it.

Came here to see if I was crazy... Fueled up and washed truck. Get home and noticed door wasn't shut.... I am sure it was shut after fueling and washing. Thought someone pulled up on it. But it never left my sight. It would hit the top lip was so out of alignment. I bent it down then pushed in top to make it flush. Seems to be ok, not perfect. 45k miles on my 2017. Not only did they take the cap holder off, the door just bends itself? WTF?

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, but the reason it bends is due to the gas cap strap. The strap gets in the way of the hinge and when you push it bends the hinge. Remove the gas cap strap and never have to worry again about it.

I think it's the hinge seizing up. Think of how many hoods were damaged over time on square body Chevy's because lubing the hinges well that would have just broke the fucking bank or the beer budget.

Anyone have any instructions on how to fix this? Mine just did the same thing last night. I've tried bending the hinge but when I get it so the door is flush with the body then the bottom right corner of the door rubs the inside. When I fix that then the door is crooked. Talk about frustrating!

My truck came brand new with a fuel door that doesn't sit flush. You guys get around to figuring out how to align it better let me know. I'll be watching the thread.

I had the same thing on my '16 OR. It could be coincidence but it didn't happen until loaded a motorcycle in the bed. I don't know how that could affect the fuel door but just an observation. I bent it back and forth 15 different ways only to bend it beyond repair...bend the rod on the hinge and put dimples in the door. In a moment of rage I decided to drill out the rivets and shitcan it all together. Making all of that worse, the drill bit snapped and a jammed the remaining bit directly into the paint on the bed.

I’ve sprayed my hinges with white lithium grease and am careful when closing it after filling up. Insane that you have to do this. I’ve also considered removing the strap since I installed the cap holder.
