Painting you brake drums probably will be a total waste of time they get hot for one and most likely take a good century to rust out. My 97 had 300K on it and the rear brakes had never been replaced

    No not at 22k miles.

I don’t understand why you would replace the brakes at all. So what, they had a little gear oil on them. Spray them down with brake clean and wipe them off. The first couple of times you get on the brakes will burn the gear oil off the brake shoes

What pisses me off is that the original drums looked fine after a decade...

They do wear, but only a severe rear brake malfunction/neglect would warrant them to be replaced. But, you're basically pissed that they didn't paint your drums, right? I deliver parts all day, I've never seen a replacement rear brake drum painted from the supplier. They come with an anti-corrosion coating (not paint) inside & out, that needs removed (inner) before installation. I can understand them replacing the shoes, there is a possible saturation factor to consider. It's the right thing to do IMO. But paint the drums? It'll cost you $90-$150@hr, if it means that much to you....

I decided to keep my 15’ (170k) for the next few years or so (dealer offered me a crazy good deal to jump into a 19’ but my test drive put the brakes on that) so decided to kind of go all out on the ol’ girl and treat her to some (possibly unnecessary) repair items. I put stoptech slotted rotors on the front (anti rust coating) and the coated drums (they have a package with all springs/hardware/drums/shoes included. Bummer was that the coated drums are silver/grey... but a quick blast with some high temp rustoleum solved that

At some point after turning my drums one of them dropped a balance weight off (tack welded on at factory) so got new drums - the only reason I did as no deep grooves that would be another reason. Yep, black Rustoleum paint makes them look good.

If you lost a rear axle seal then your brake shoes would be covered in gear oil and thet deffently need to be replaced, I know you can not purchase brake shoes individually (only one side), and you want your brakes to ware as even as possible so both set should be replaced at the same time. Now as far as the drums go, yes they are a wearing part meaning that at some point they will need replacement, HOWEVER at 22k miles I dont see that being needed. Brake drums are able to be resurfaced if they become glazed or warped from overheating, but as far as being contaminated with oil that's what brake clean is for. What was their reason for replacement? Did you ask for the old parts back?? And if you only have 22k miles isn't that warranty work???

The brake drums were original to the truck, with like 106K on them. The shoes and linings were replaced at 84K.

I always figure in new rotors and drums when I replace brake pads. You can normally have your current ones turned but not always and the convenience of not having to take them somewhere and pick them up again outweighs the cost difference of new disks/drums. Then recycle the old ones. You can get painted disks/drums from Rockauto.com for a few dollars more than unpainted. The unpainted ones do rust literally overnight.

Why does New Jersey not allow motorists to pump their own gas?!?! I’ve heard Oregon is the same way?

On one occasion, I actually had to show a guy from NJ with a Range Rover how to operate a gas pump at a self-serve station here in PA!

Unless I’m at or below a quarter of a tank, I go out of my way to avoid refueling in Jersey!

LOL, ever read the comments when Oregon tried to pass a law allowing people to pump their own gas?
