I have a 2011 Tacoma 4 door longbed that is purely a hunting truck. We take it out west with us as hell. Would like to build a headache rack with a winch mounted up top to help with loading animals, including elk. Anybody ever done this? and how did you mount it? i imagine just to the top of the rails like most do is not going to be sufficient for that kind of weight.

I would think not because of the angle of the force but with a long bed, you could build a hoop like the front hoop of the Bruteforce Fab bed cage that connects at the bed bolts and then add a couple stabilizers a foot or so back to the bedrails. That would provide more than enough support.

I'd also consider a hitch-mounted hoist which is the easy solution in my experience.
