So why does Toyota sell the Tacoma with the ECU tune that it does?

I do know someone with the tune, and I have driven it... and I still don't think there is anything wrong with mine. Theirs drives different, but I wouldn't call it better, just different.

And no offense was taken, I just enjoy being a bit of a smart ass at times.

You can get the TSB done, if it's a taste you want.

edit- joking aside, aren't the 2019, 2020's already updated with this TSB you speak of?

I've posted here before that I was intrigued by the overwhelming number of folks here that paid a significant amount of money for a software solution. As a disclaimer, I am of the opinion folks can do with their money what they want, but I could not personally justify spending that much money for it, so I researched 3 specific TSB's that advised a reflash for the ECU. I took it to my service department, they flashed it, and I have been very happy with the results, without spending a dime. It all boils down to your personal expectations and cost benefit analysis. You'll find plenty of support and positive testimonials to that end.

Most likely, they tuned it to get what they wanted and haven't bothered to find improvements.

Does OVTune really impact emissions or CAFE standards to where it would have a negative impact. I'm betting not.

Correct answer, but I suspect 2% is WAY overestimating. The transmission is fine. 250 some odd thousand people test drive it and buy the truck a year. A tiny percentage have a problem and that gets magnified by the echo chamber.

I have a theory that the transmission "problem" is nothing more than a self reinforcing feedback loop of people trying to out learn a learning transmission.

There's definitely an issue imo. If my Honda Civic driving sister asks me about my transmission...I think there's an issue

I would love to get the OV Tune, but it's for off-road use only. Using it on-road violates the agreement and warranty.

I have nothing against the tune or the manufacturer. It looks like an awesome product. But the "Off Road Only" disclaimer is ridiculous.

It is a disclaimer to protect them. If something were to happen on road, they can argue that they sold it for off-road use only and not be liable Also for things like emissions, if they do in fact make a difference there. That is a common disclaimer for a large number of after market things. Blame our sue-happy culture :D

I get it. But the problem is that it puts all liability on the buyer, even if the buyer is not otherwise at fault. Because absolutely NOBODY intends to use this for off-road only, that's a pretty crappy business practice, IMO.

"not responsible for changes to emissions" or "not responsible for additional throttle response" is a more reasonable disclaimer.

I don't think that matches with the on road laws, especially with places like CA (but I've never researched, cause I never cared). It also seems to be the standard phrase when it comes to after market things, especially on a vehicle known for off-roading.

And, IMO, it should be the liability of the buyer to make sure what they are getting meets the laws of where they live. I cannot stand the "blame the manufacturer" stuff that is happening lately (with anything)

This thread has a lot of erroneous info and conjecture. It really wasn't worth posting in, but I appreciate what you have brought to the forum here.

So, here is what OVT has to say about emissions:

One my side and for most everyone that I have seen, the tunes increase MPGs. I was up 2.5mpg this summer on the latest Beta versions over the TSB tunes.

I agree, but the product (any product) should at least carry a guarantee to work as described, or even a warranty against defect. This product carries neither, as soon as you go on pavement. Imagine a rock slider that carried a "for use on pavement only" CYA statement, or a dash cam that carried a "not for use while driving" CYA. It's just dumb.

I'm surprised you're running 91 octane. You're spending at least $0.40 a gallon more for something that offers no real benefit for this vehicle.

I can't speak to any warranty, but I would think that would be different than the claim of off-road use only. I followed the threads when they first came up cause I had some weirdness that I couldn't explain. But once the TSB fixed that, I stopped following them cause I saw no need to spend money anymore.

There are OVTunes that require the higher octanes (per the people who made OVTune), which from what I read in his post it looked like that is what he was running.
